I’m just wondering if Avast Pro is a lot better than Avast Home. I notice that it has script blocking, but is there a lot else? The Home edition is feature-packed and I’d like to not have to pay if possible! Does script blocking make a lot of difference or is it not really necessary? ???
This depends on your requirements, The Pro version not only provide additional functionality, it also provides more flexibility in how viruses are dealt with.
Script protection, really is a must, so if you don’t use the pro version this is another program that you need to be running.
Avast Home V Avast Pro differences http://www.avast.com/eng/av4_version_comp.html
I am using Avast home edition;
What other program can I use to protect my pc from script running.
Thanx
Disable the execution of scripts in the browser options and set the apropiate settings in your OS and applications.

cherrycola,
Based on the tone of your question and its’ wording I feel that HOME would be more than appropriate for your needs.
The advanced features of PRO are more than the average user needs.
You can download either Script Defender(http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/system.htm) or Script Sentry (http://www.jasons-toolbox.com/programs.asp) which will take care of “malicious scripts”.
Good luck.
Hi again, I’ve decided to install Avast Home. I have Giant Anti-Spyware already running on my computer. It has script blocking as part of the Real Time protection, so my computer should be well protected.
Thanks for your help.
Don’t forget a firewall
cherrycola,
I was unaware that Giant had a script blocker as part of the resident shield.
Their guard acts from a database much like Spywareblaster which is freeware with updates. I use it with SpywareGuard. Both run resident and do a great “free” job.
I added Script Sentry on my W98 and Script Defender on the ME machine. My XP uses Avast Pro.
The drawback to Giant is that it is payware at $29.95 with updates for a year.
Anyway…if your happy with it, fine.
As Eddy said…Make sure you do not forget to have a good firewall in place!
wish the script modul is part of home too
but being realistic about capitalism i wish home users can buy it for some cheap fee
let say turning free Home into Home+ lol
i find hard to possible home users with 2-3 computers used to online browsing capable buy 2-3 Pro licences …
As a matter of fact we’re in the process of considering a “Home Pro Suite” that would basically enable you to install avast Pro on any number of machines in the same household for a fixed (moderate) fee…
Cheers
Vlk
That’s something unbelievably good. I’m sure many will be very very very happy with Home Pro Suite.
Great move Alwil !
I’ll join in.
That’s a great idea and I think a lot will go for it. Just a thought on the name Home Pro, could that not be a little confusing with two Pro versions? How about ‘Home Plus’ or ‘Home Plus Suite’ or ‘Home + Suite’?
What do you guys think?
sounds like a terrific idea…
if only Microsoft would realize we cannot all afford to pay for multiple copies/licenses (which are still expensive) for XP
No matter what you would call the new “license”, its’ popularity would defend on the price differential between the full Pro license and this new one.
I like the idea. This would be good for the user who has a desktop machine and say a laptop. As long as it is in the same household ( as I read VLK’s comments), then the user would benefit greatly.
But if the laptop is taken out of the house, does it violate the license??? Ummmmm… ???
oki simple , what about “Pro lite” ?
this way Home = free and Pro lite = little tiny fee for script module
lol
something like Avast! 4browsing edition
Why we always have to change something that Alwil already decided ?
HOME PRO VERSIOn sounds great… it means version for your homes guys, not home as freeware, and Pro because it is Professional…
I think that original name that Vlk mentioned suits great and it should be used as it is…
Cheers !
Is it envisaged that the Home+ version, or whatever it ends up being called, would allow the user access to the more advanced GUI (one thing I don’t like about Avast is the so-called simple user interface)? I’m not currently using Avast because of the problems with setting up e-mail scanner with the earlier versions (I opted for BitDefender 8 instead but it does slow down my system noticeably at times).
4.0/4.1 issues ? as i don’t have problems with email scanner in 4.5 with nearly anything …
