So I was trying to install chrome on a friend’s new computer today and as Windows 8.1 comes with IE and Bing as their default I (stupidly) searched for “chrome” and clicked the first link that came up. The link wouldn’t work and kept saying the file had been taken down so I went back and suddenly realized I had been clicking on some website called downloadinfo.co/Google-Chrome (or something like that). I immediately was like, “Wow, I remember why IE and Bing suck so much now.”, as the website was rated 4.5 stars by Bing itself.
I’ve run an Avast boot-time scan on the computer as well as Malwarebytes and they didn’t find anything but I’m wondering, is this site actually safe? I was trying to do research on the website but I can’t find anything about it except that its identity is being hidden. If it is a virus is there any way it’s still on the computer after both Avast and Malwarebytes have been run?
Depends on how worried you are about an infection. What one scanner does not see, another will, so attach all requested logs so a certified malware expert can look them over. If they are clean he will say so. Reason for doing things this way is because teamviewer is not used here, only text-based logs, so the expert cannot directly see what is on your system. Anyway, logs are decipherable only for someone trained to read them.
