Is Email really being scanned?

Hello,

I set the parameter “Show try icon when scanning mail” but so far I have yet to see any icon in my tray while sending or receiving email. So I am wondering if there is any way that I can find out if my mail is even being scanned at all? I have Outlook 2007 and Vista Home Premium.

Thanks.

Dave

Ah, hmm. Ignore that message. Sorry. Just noticed on the “provider” page that the number of messages scanned as well as the last message scanned is shown. I guess that answers the question.

Still, I am curious why I haven’t seen that “icon” that I signed up for.

Dave

It does appear on my system, unfortunately I’m using XP Pro and Outlook Express so my OS and email client plus avast provider/plug in would be different.

If you’re using Outlook you need to look and configure the Outlook plugin.
If you use Outlook Express or other email program, you need to check Internet Mail provider.

Tech ! What actually is “Internet mail” Provider scanning ??? Mine shows Scanned count 0, infected 0. Sensitive set High. (or dose it not work with Windows ME ?)

Internet Mail providers scans the email clients like Outlook Express, Thunderbird, Incredimail, Pegasus Mail… Do you use any of these products?

Tech,

forgive me but did you miss the reference to Windows ME? If a poster uses any of those clients then the Internet Mail provider will not scan them by default in Windows ME.

Perhaps you have a ready link to your excellent advice in this case.

Well yes, I have done that. The “problem” was that it takes a split second to send one test email. I noticed a flash of something that could be the icon. It was in the tray for a split second. Then gone. I guess I would need at least ten or twenty outgoing emails to get a decent look at it.

Sorry, miss that yeah…
avast! works with multiple smtp/pop servers and can protect as many pop3/smtp server accounts as you want:

With 98\Me:

  1. Configure your email accounts to work without the antivirus and test them.
  2. If everything is fine, close all your email clients (programs).
  3. Start Menu > All programs > avast antivirus > Mail Protection Wizard
  4. Follow the non Outlook/Exchange option (i.e., the second one).
You can choose the supported email programs and select all the accounts
(even the ones created in the future).
  5. Configure your email accounts to use avast! as antivirus.

With XP:

With Windows 2k\XP, avast 4.5 has a new mail detection that will work automatically. Please, set up your email account just as avast does not exist. It will detect the pop3/smpt/imap ports and scan your messages. Can you make a try and see if it’s ok? Thanks.
New email detection is automatic and do not require user interaction. Anyway, spam killer applications need manually change email account settings

Note: the pop/smtp default servers are just the ‘default’ ones. They would be used to send files to Alwil Software (for virus analysis, for instance) and in special email accounts configurated to use ‘default’ servers.

Hope this helps.

Well… faster is better, isn’t it? Just joking, but if the icon remains there for a long time, what’s the purpose?

Not complaining, just explaining. ;D

  1. Start Menu > All programs > avast antivirus > Mail Protection Wizard.

Tech, is this in Home or pro. ?? I have home (free) and the windows ME. Thanks

It applies to both home and pro as the issue is the OS and not the avast version.

Let me throw my 2 cents in here as a WindowsMe user… I use OE and have learned that the icon in question remains as long as there is email being downloaded and scanned… If there is little or nothing to download it will be gone in the blink of an eye…
