I posted this in the wrong section so I’m trying here:
I have installed Avast Free 5.0.594 but the Web Shield is unprotected. I’ve uninstalled several times; reinstalled but it still does not work. I rebooted each time I uninstalled but it still does not work.
I declined the option for Google Chrome. Is that the reason I can’t get the Web Shield protection?
I’ve enabled all of the options for Avast in my PC Tools Firewall Plus. At this point, I’m pretty frustrated.
I need your help. ???

Is it necessary to have Google Chrome installed with Avast Free 5.0.594?
no
did you have any previous installed antivirus program?
have you removed it?
have you run a removal tool to remove all leftovers?
you can find removal tools here http://uninstallers.blogspot.com/
have you tried avast repair ?
For a repair of avast. Windows, Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button from the pop-up window, scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

Yes,

I used Revo Uninstaller the last time (3rd time)

I will try it next. It said to disable Avast
Shields before uninstalling. I failed to do that in each of my uninstalls but will do it the next time. Maybe that
is the key!! Hopeful.

Yes, I did before I uninstalled the last time. There was a lot that was added but it didn’t take care of the problem.

and also, have you checked for malware that may block the install
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.46 http://filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
after install click update so you have latest database before scan
click the remove selected button to quarantine anything found
if anything is found you may post the scan log here
I updated Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, ran it and " (No malicious items detected)".
The only thing suggested and not tried was on the uninstall information. It said to stop all Avast Protections before uninstalling. I’m hopeful that it will work. If not, I will have to give up on Avast; I’ve been using Avast for many years and have been well protected so hate to see it go.
Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. Boot.
Register your free copy or add the license key for Pro.
I’ve followed the directions to a “T” but also “Permanently Disabled all shields” before starting the uninstall process. That was advised in the avast!Uninstall Utility.
I’m very sorry to report that I’m still not protected for Web Shield. I’ve clicked on the “Fix Now” and “Turn On” button but it doesn’t take hold.
There was one thing that showed that made me think it’s a problem with the PC Tools Firewall.
I have the following checked with both the In and Out all green:
I never realized before how beautiful the words, “Your system is secured” is until today. It happened as quickly as the firewall was uninstalled and I rebooted! I have no idea what the problem in the firewall was but the new one, Outpost, is working really well.
It was an eenie, minnie between Outpost and Online Armour Firewalls and I choose Outpost because I’ve had it before and it worked quite well with Avast.
I am so pleased that I didn’t give up on Avast. During the past 2 days, I uninstalled and reinstalled Avast at least 5 times with the same result, System Not Secured. Celebrating sounds like a great idea!! 8)
