I don’t use IE and have toggled it off in my machine. I’m using Chrome as my browser. For a while now I haven’t been getting the pop-up when Avast ver. 5 auto-updates. It does seem to be doing the updates, however. I don’t know the proxy settings for Chrome, or even if there is one. By using no proxy (direct connection) will I get the notifications back when Avast auto-updates or am I putting my machine at risk by doing this. Thanks for any input.
Peace…
Yes, if you don’t use a proxy it should be OK.
The update doesn’t use IE, but would check the IE settings to see if you used a proxy and would use that information.
Yes,I use no proxy and just use the default settings of avast!the update is normal

If you are still at XP Pro SP2 then you should update to SP3 as it has been available for almost 2 years.
Thanks DavidR and Wildcard for your help. Good to know I can use no proxy. I have configured Avast in accordance with your answers. I am still getting no pop-up after updating, however, even though Avast is configured to do so and used to until recently.
Peace…
You’re welcome.
Do your Update settings match this image (excluding the Update Parameters, I’m on dial-up) ?
Have you changed any sounds settings, as if you disable the sound for automatic update, I think that also disables the pop-up ?
Have you set the Silent/Gaming Mode to Silent/Gaming Mode as that too would kill the sound and pop-up ?
DavidR, yes, I had silent/ gaming mode set to “on.” I’ve turned it off and will see if that’s got the problem solved. As for all the other settings you mentioned, they were already configured as per your suggestions.
Thanks once again for your kind assistance.
Peace…
You’re welcome.
I have no doubt that the problem will now be solved as that is the purpose of the silent/gaming mode. I don’t believe that it requires a reboot for that change to be immediately effective.
You were entirely correct, DavidR. It was the silent/gaming mode. I must have inadvertently turned it on. All is working as it should now. Again I thank you for your kind assistance. Peace meantime…
No problem, glad I could help.
