Is it possible...

New Avast user here…I just installed Avast Home 4.6 on my Windows Me PC after reading the rave reviews on Download.com. However, WinMe does not give information about the running processes and Windows services like Windows XP does.
Can someone here give me this information:
What processes does Avast run? How many of them can be set to be started manually?
Thanks much in advance for any replies.

Hello Hobbit1, Welcome to the Avast products and the forum. You might want to go HERE to read up on how to set up your Avast settings. ;D The first link I gave was for folks who use broadband type of connections. Here is another link for those of you that use
dial up connection. Please go HERE to view this tutorial.

See Process Explorer (http://www.sysinternals.com/). There is a version for Windows 98\Me.
It’s very good for what you need 8) Welcome to avast forums.

Wow! What quick responses! Thanks a lot, all! It looks like Avast will be able to run the way I need it to on my WinXP machine as well. You see, I am a professional musician, and use my XP machine for music creation, and the music software runs best if I can keep other processes to a minimum. So if I set those Avast services to manual start, and create shortcuts to start ashServ.exe and ashwebsv.exe when I need them, I should be good to go, right?

In fact not… It’s better set the Sensitivity of the Standard Shield provider to a Custom level, unchecking the scanning on open/create/modify files (low level) and disabling NOT the avast services but only the providers you do not need (P2P or IM, for instance). Better safe than sorry.

We’re not that fast this time… ;D

I agree with Tech.
For your safety I suggest to switch off the webshield when you are not surfing and to keep stopped your mailer if you don’t run the Ash.maiSv. Yes, you can also stop the automatic download of the updates and set it as manual.

I can understand your caution, but believe me, there is a method to my madness. I have run Norton AV 2003 in a similar manner on my laptop for some time now, and I am quite conscientious about starting my AV and firewall before I go online. I do have broadband, but I keep the router and modem turned off unless I am going to go online.
Of course since I just installed Avast on my WinMe machine today, I have yet to become familiar with the program. So as I do, and when I install Avast on my XP machine, I will be learning as I go, , and I will definitely keep all your advice in mind.
It is quite evident that this forum rocks!
