Do I lose notifications such as ‘avast has blocked this site’, ‘trojan horses’, etc? If I’m running silent/gaming mode? If so, is it really worth the speed that I gain in exchange for this? I watch youtube, etc. in full screen. But I don’t play games or do presentations.

Yes you do.

First I believe there is no speed gain from enabling silent/gaming mode, in effect it is just removing the interactive actions from avast. Those interactive responses include alerts/warnings/notifications, etc. But I don’t believe it is doing anything to actually speed up gaming as far as I’m aware.
There may be other background actions that may cease (though I don’t know this for sure), such as the downloading of streaming updates, virus definition updates and possibly connection to and updating your my.avast.com account.
- Avast detects Full Screen applications and switches to silent/gaming mode automatically so you don’t have to do it anyway.

Unchecking this may or may not help in speeding up certain intensive activities.
If you’re having a performance problem, it’s worth a try.
