Is iYogi for real?

They took control of my computer, showed me a bunch of problems, and offered to fix them for $169.99. I have a tech guy who will fix anything for $40, so I declined to pay and they disconnected. Now that they and all their programs are off my computer, I can’t find a reason to pay to have my computer fixed. All the “errors” and “trojans” and “registry issues” they offered to fix for $169.99 only existed while they had control of my computer. I’m concerned avast! is introducing their customers to a bunch of thugs. It seems like avast! is offering customers free phone support, but I’m concerned it’s more like avast! is offering iYogi a free supply of unsuspecting victims. Say it aint so.

looks lika a rogue

They provide third party support for avast, but they have in the past tried to sell their other products.

  • Adam Riley, riley (at) avast (dot) com Avast Third-party Support Manager, has requested info about iYogi, so if you have time to recount your experience (copy and paste your post, etc.), give the link to this topic.

@ HeavyD25271,

I have also contacted Adam Riley on your behalf and he should be contacting you soon. You can continue to get support for your problems or issues here on the forum. Thank you.

Good morning,

@ HeavyD25271 - Thank you for your comments and bringing this to my attention; I have just sent you an email directly now regarding this.

@ DavidR & SafeSurf - Thank you both for the private messages about this.

Best regards,
Adam Riley
Third Party Support Manager

Just to clarify,

I informed the iYogi rep that I was trying to secure my computer after an attack. I told him I had already cleaned everything off the computer, and he led me to believe I had not removed the threat properly. He then showed me a bunch of errors, stopped programs, and a Trojan virus on my computer.

When I asked him what he thought about the ability of avast! to keep me secure and take care of my problems, he told me he that I would not be safe unless I paid the $169.99, and he claimed that he couldn’t tell me anything about avast!. He was not concerned with answering my antivirus questions, just pushing his $169.99 product. I declined and he disconnected.

Once I investigated his claims about my security threats, I found the programs working properly and scans from at least 6+ different security programs can find no Trojan (including avast!).

With fiends like iYogi, who needs phishing and scareware.

Sorry Adam Riley, in the process of cleaning off my computer I have managed to erase the reference number I had saved. I’m sure if you make a handful of anonymous calls to iYogi customer support you will come up with plenty of your own horror stories to bring up to the iYogi big wigs.

God bless,

Dustin

Dustin,

Please email Adam again and he will give you the reference number again. Adam, who works for Avast, is trying to rectify the situation you described. Thank you.

The iYogi rep gave me the reference number. I had it saved to a sticky note, but I accidentally deleted it doing some clean up before Adam Riley requested it from me.

Email Adam and he can take care of things for you.

I emailed Adam again, but without a reference number to the call I don’t think there is much he can do.

I was doing an install and I was prompted to close all programs. I opened task manager, and without thinking, I closed everything including the sticky notes.

I should have known better than to use a sticky note. I don’t even think there’s a save feature to be able to close a note and open it back up again…

Adam will be able to retrieve the information needed, so don’t worry about it.

Let me know if you have any additional questions. Otherwise, for any iYogi issues, just email Adam directly.

I recently upgraded to avast internet 6 (paid user). Computer kept closing down yesterday tried to do a bootscan but computer didn’t react to “schedule now” Rang support number - got iyogi- guy took over my computer - very worrying - looked all over computer and pointed out problems then proceded to download a malware program and was not interested in my avast problem at all. He just kept trying to sell me a one year subscription to iyogi for $189.99. I told him I was worried after a while and shut him down, then hopefully deleted all of his stuff. After that my computer crashed altogether with windows at startup saying it couldn’t start up (words to that affect) and closed down. Iam now using my old computer, but problem is same thing is happening. Haven’t upgraded to “paid” Avast, but did click on upgrade to avast 6. Computer now switching on and off by itself. Managed to do a bootscan in safe mode but showed nothing. Avast is now saying I need to update it or “fix” it but I am too frightened to do so. Any ideas? I did manage to get a reference number from Yogi guy.

Welcome almaloray to the forum.

Did you email Adam Riley as suggested in the thread above? I will contact him on your behalf and we can help you here as well.

So your problems began after doing an Avast upgrade? What version were you using prior to the upgrade? What product are you using (Free)?

Was your machine acting normally PRIOR to doing the Avast upgrade? If yes, then I suggest an Avast uninstall and a clean install:

  1. Save a copy of Avast and save it to your HDD:
    http://www.avast.com/download-software – all products for version 6.0.1125
  2. Download the Avast Uninstall Utility http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear6.exe and save it to your HDD.
  3. Disconnect from the Internet at this time.
  4. Go to Control Panel and uninstall Avast through Add/Remove Programs if possible and reboot.
  5. If Step 4 fails, boot into Safe Mode (hit F8 repeatedly) and run the Avast Uninstall Tool.
  6. Reboot.
  7. Install the newest version of Avast and reboot.
  8. Get Internet access and register your copy or add the license key for Free, Pro, or AIS.
    Free – http://www.avast.com/registration-free-antivirus.php
  9. Update the Avast definitions.

If your machine was not acting normally PRIOR to doing the upgrade, please check your computer for malware with Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware (MBAM).
· Download free http://www.malwarebytes.org/ (the blue button) for an on-demand scanner.
· Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
· After install, click update so you have latest database before scanning.
· Under Settings:
o General: Automatically Save File After Scan Completes is checked off
o Scanner Settings: Check all boxes
o Updater: Download and install update if available is checked off
· Once the program has loaded, select “Perform QUICK Scan”, then click Scan.
· The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
· When the disinfection scan is complete, a log will appear in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note).
· Click the “remove selected” button to quarantine anything found. You will find the infection details under the Quarantine tab.
· The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
· Copy & Paste the entire MBAM report in your next reply.

Please let me know if this fixes your problems. Adam Riley will be sending you an email and you can email privately about your iYogi issues while I work with you on resolving your machine problem. Let me know if you have any questions. Thank you.
