Is my Avast Running or NOT??

Hello,

I a windows XP OS. Three years ago I installed a avast the home edition on my machine. It ran smoothly with regular updates being downloaded.
A year later, when my registration license expired I renewed it with a new registration code. And since then I have never seen the blue Avast icon on the lower right corner of my PC. Furthermore, updates are not regularly being downloaded as they used too. So I don't here the voice saying ".. that updates have been downloaded... ". This is what made me skeptical of whether avast is running or not. My guess is that it is not. I checked the processes running in Task Manager and I found this:

  ashServ.exe, aswUpdSv.exe, ashWebSv.exe, ashMaiSv.exe

I tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it but it did not solve the problem.

  Any help will be appreciated..

regards,

Hi nassim!

I think ashDisp.exe is missing.
Try starting ashDisp.exe manually from the program folder… (C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashDist.exe)
Is this possible?

Can you post the program version of your installation, please? Current version is 4.8.1335.

Hello,

   Thank you for your reply..

Yes, it was possible to launch ashDisp.exe.. Now, I can see the blue Avast icon..
So now it is up and working? But do I have to manually launch ashDisp.exe every time a restart my Laptop??

Thanks again,
Nassim

So now it is up and working?

-= You may test avast’s functionality using an EICAR test file

Until we find an other solution you can create a shortcut to the ashDisp.exe and place it in the “Autostart” or “Startup”-folder… (I don’t know how it is called in english… “Autostart” is the German name…)
So that it automatically is started each boot…

I don’t know what here is the exact problem, but this should work for the first time…

possibly someone else has an other idea!

avast! icon missing - As a temporary measure until this is resolved you can create a desktop shortcut for this file C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashDisp.exe (the avast icon and interface to the providers). Right click on the file and select Send To, Desktop (create shortcut). You will need to run this after each boot until the problem is resolved.

Personally I would wait before considering placing a link into the startup folder or you won’t be able to fault find the reason why it isn’t displayed on startup ;D

What other security based software do you have that might block new startup entries, e.g. Spybot S&D (TeaTimer), AdAware (AdWatch), SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor (StartUpGuard or OnGuard), PrevX, WinPatrol, ProcessGuard, etc. ?

Check the option in the Appearance tab of Program Settings.

Hello,

   Current version is 4.8.1335.

Ok.. I'll create a shortcut for the time being on my Desktop. But how can this be resolved? Because, this is kind of painful to do it manually every time.

And yes I do have Spybot S&D (TeaTimer) running now.. and I did have some other Spyware softwares such as Spyware Doctor but I removed them

regards,

Please click on “Start” and then “Run” (or press “Strg” + “R” on your keyboard)
write “msconfig” and click “Okay” or “Enter”.
Go to the Startup-Tab (possibly an other name…) and watch out for the avast!-entry…
is it ticked? if not, try to tick it and “save” it…

hello,

Avast is not even in the list..

regards

Because it is likely that S&D TeaTimer killed the entry and I hate aplications that take autonomous actions like this without asking or informing the user. However, it may be that you changed a setting in TeaTimer not to inform you.

So you need to check the S&D TeaTimer to see if it did block the new start-up entry and allow/reverse the action.
