always click the update button before you start a scan
click on the remove selected button to quarantine anything found

It is more likely that someone whom you communicate with is infected and their email address book is used to harvest email addresses, these are used in the from address of spam emails.
Another alternative is that your email address have been harvested and is on a spam list, these addresses not only receive spam but can have the email address used as the Sender address.
Set the avast Mail Shield to High heuristics as that would give an indication of any undetected trojan spambot on your system.
Another issue is that this tactic (so called bounced email) is used to get you concerned enough to open the attachment (that usually comes with the bounced email) and you could well be in trouble then.
