Thanks for the advice, but I had already done that.

Regards, Michaela

Does it not work?
If so, try reinstalling your Sygate firewall.
There are several Avast components you will need to allow Internet access in order to perform an update successfully.

 I did that as well. It seems to be a better today…lol. We’ll see how it goes.

Thanks again…

Blessings…Michaela

ZoneAlarm (probably other firewalls too) have a feature to ‘lock’ your hosts file.

Hi all,

I have the same problem (on a PC of a friend) and already followed all the advices mentioned here at no avail.

The browser can reach 216.12.202.5:80 that is supposed to be down by updating!

I run a connection test by Avast settings, here is the log:

Kerim

Hi again,

I like to add that only today I re-installed and full updated the OS ‘Windows ME’.
And the only protecting software I installed is Avast4 Home.

Kerim

Hi,

I temporarely solved the database updating issue on my friend’s PC by full downloading it from avast.com

For instance, I had the same problem after installing Avast! 4 Home on another friend’s PC running XP SP1 (He had AVG free that I uninstalled). That one is not registered… yet. I thought it might be the cause.

By the way, I myself run on my PC ‘Avast4 Pro’ and I am very satisfied with it.
But I noticed a difference about the license keys. Mine is shown in the ‘About avast!..’ but it was not the case after registering the home edition of my friend with the key received by email. Is it normal for home edition?

Kerim

I don’t understand the question. Are you saying that your avast doesn’t show in the licensing info in the About box?

I am very sorry Vlk :frowning:

Please disregard my last note about the keys. It seems I was very tired yesterday. I rechecked about it the expire date is ok, Nov 2005. I forgot that the last digits in the license key are not shown in the list.

Thank you for your care… but the main problem about ‘server is down’ is always around, though the IE browser can reach it directly.

Kerim

By the way you may ask me anything you like me to check and log perhaps.
Although I am rather expert only in electronics design  with some help I think I can walk also into the PC jungle ;D

since I have the same problem as of our friend luieg1, I tried to compare some avast files in:
1- my PC that can update (running Avast4 pro),
2- my friend’s PC that got ‘server down’ error (running newly installed Avast4 Home)

Here is the first file… setup.ini

Good, on XP SP2 (Avast4 Pro)

False, on Win ME (Avast4 Home)

Are the missing lines normal?

By the way, ‘servers.def’ are identical in both PCs.

While I am connected to Internet, I used again today the repair option in uninstall Avast (Start → Control Panel → Add/Remove Programs) and Avast succeeded to update (now is 438-1).
