I have been going through my log files, and there are some errors that show up repeatedly. Is there a place on the avast site where these error messages are described? For example, in the ERROR section, I have repeated entries like this:
Where can I find out what error 00000006 and 000000005 are? Is there a glossary or table somewhere?
What might be wrong with the file “First Rehearsal Commentary.doc?”
Also, these logs would indicate to me that the virus scanner is scanning files that exist on network drives residing on other computers on my network. Is this a good thing?
I think the 00000005 and 00000006 are windows errors 5=Access is denied. and 6=The handle is invalid. So both of these aren’t of much help, personally I don’t go looking in the logs (unless I’m experiencing any problem) as much of it is of more use to the programmers doing a diagnostic check.
Some of these verbose error messages will disappear in a future program update, I think because they cause undue concern for the user. This has been discussed for the GetQueuedCompletionStatus failed!!! one for sure and one of the avast developers has basically said it isn’t anything to be concerned about.
The other ones relating to 0000005 may for a valid reason deny access.
If a problem is serious you will almost certainly get some form of pop-up, then I would investigate. Are you experiencing any problems ?
Are you using the Administrator account or an account with adminstrator rights? or, on contrary, a common user account?
Seems you’re scanning a remote file and, probably, you do not have access to it…
I received a pop-up on an attempt to install a new firewall. I immediately aborted, de-installed the firewall, rebooted, and did a full scan. But then I went back to the log to look and see where the initial virus had been found. When I did that, I found all these other messages.
I guess I’m not that worried, but it does seem weird that files are being scanned that are on other computers on my network… I am using an account with Administrator rights. But I have done nothing to ask the scanner to look at anything on a remote computer… why would it attempt to do so?
When I run a scan manually, I always set use the option for “Scan local disks”, which is C: and D:.
However, the log file messages referring to files on the network disks are so frequent in the log files that they clearly have nothing to do with manual scans, they must have something to do with the On-Access scanner. I don’t know where it tells me what the On-Access scanner is scanning… I have never changed it from what it was when it installed. Can you tell me how I can see what it is checking? Thanks.
I am using Vista. I have clicked the “Show Detailed Information” option. Should I wait for another scan and look in my log file? I’m not sure where the “Detailed Information” would show up… Thanks.
You shouldn’t have to wait, any time the standard shield scans a file you should get a pop-up at the bottom of the screen listing all the files it has scanned.
The show detailed information isn’t directly associated with the log files, rather a live list of files as they are scanned…
OK, I see those pop-ups fly by. Not sure… what am I supposed to glean from them? I’m so sorry if I am being a complete dunderhead and this should be obvious…
They show what is being scanned, you said effectively that you didn’t know where was being scanned. "Can you tell me how I can see what it is checking? "
Whilst they appear and disappear quickly you should be able to get an idea of the folders and possibly files that are being scanned, from this you may be able to understand the activity/program which is causing avast to scan.
