Is there still a need to disable self-defense, in order to obtain 1335 update?

I updated this morning, from build 1296 to 1335 (after learning elsewhere of its existence/release). As best as I can tell, all went well — but I have not had any time to test things at all.

Anyway, I just came across this thread http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=42266.0 which talks about the Beta (pre-)release build 1330, and notes that:

1. NEW! go to avast settings, and on the Troubleshooting page, disable the avast self-defense module (this is NECESSARY for the update to complete successfully)
2. download and run the following program: link snapped
3. after it completes, re-enable self-defense module (disabled in step 1.)

Questions:

  1. were those directions, to [temporarily] disable the self-defense module, only applicable to the Beta (pre-)release build 1330? Or do they still apply to the “final” release build 1335, using the internal updater? [If so, I believe there should have been a more prominent announcement.]
  2. if still applicable to the final release 1335:
a- what “damage” might I have inflicted by installing build 1335 with self-defense enabled (and without getting any warning/error messages, nor noticing any overt problems); and
b- what steps, if any, should I take now to “repair” the situation? — or to test/confirm that everything is working properly?

Only the beta requires the advanced protection to be turned off and then on after install.

I updated all my computers before receiving the announcement for right-clicking and selecting ‘update programs’. A reboot is required.
Notifications are shown within a 7-day period aftre release of an update to prevent a server overload.

I would run a full scan to indicate that you have no problem on the small chance that you got infected during the update (only if you turned self-defense off).

It is because that release was a beta release and needed to change elements in the regular release to convert to beta, without the self-defence module being disabled that would be blocked.

You don’t have to do this in the regular program updates, so no issues at all not disabling the self-defence module.

I intend to run a full-scan regardless… even though I did not disable the self-defense module during update.

I had learned of the existence of the update from the DELL forum (thanks to my buddy, Joe53, for posting there); and it’s also mentioned on the CalendarOfUpdates website.

I RIGHT-clicked on the avast a-ball in the system tray, chose UPDATES, and then PROGRAM UPDATES.

Rebooted as indicated.

And then, I found the thread about the beta update. As long as turning off self-defense was required only for the beta, then that means I should be okay.

You are OK, you should disregard any instructions that relate to a beta release as they don’t apply to regular updates.
