Is this a false alarm or real

When I do a scan of my computer I receive this message (I have attached a jpg of the scan log):

Can someone please confirm that this is what Avast does if it does not regonize something (as Dell claims) and is thus a false alarm…and the Win32 Malware is just an all encompassing description used?

Thanks

This looks on the face of it like a false detection.
Something about the file is similar enough to, or expected to behave in a similar fashion to, the generic detection of Win32:Malware.

Avast does not do this with just any old file it does not recognize, just those that are estimated to represent a possible threat.

What I would do is submit the files to VirusTotal (one at a time) and once they have been scanned, copy the url of the results page to your next reply.

The chances look higher of it being a false positive if only Avast and GData detect these as malware.

Is this problem related to your other thread http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=66768.0? If so, you should keep it to one thread – the original one that you started and posted here since you were instructed to contact Avast for a possible false positive. Thank you.

If this is a different issue, continue with this thread.

This is a new topic and I wnet to the VirusTotal site…

There were two files in question one was the Dell ControlPoint Connection Manager Installer (I do not think that is the problem and it is 239MB…so it would take a while to analysis) the other file I did put through and got this result:

File name: 1033.MST
Submission date: 2010-12-01 18:20:13 (UTC)
Current status: finished
Result: 0 /43 (0.0%)

I think that means it’s ok - correct?

Does the readout from the virus site tell me that this is a false alarm?

It would appear to be an FP which has been corrected.

If even avast doesn’t detect it on VT, is says either you have an old version of the virus definitions or between the time it was detected and you uploaded it to VT the FP has been corrected.

Ensure you have the latest virus definitions and scan the file again from within the chest. If it is no longer detected you can restore it to its original location.

this is FP; of what I can see this a bios update; my previous laptop has phoenix as bios provider/producer.
