Is Version 5.0 Still Incompatible with ZoneAlarm's Privacy Control ??

Is avast! antivirus Version 5.0 still incompatible with ZoneAlarm’s Privacy Control ??

Past versions of avast! antivirus have been incompatible with ZoneAlarm’s Privacy Control. In order to run avast! antivirus 4.8 side-by-side with ZoneAlarm, one had to (A) disable the Web Shield’s “transparent proxy mode” by setting avast4.ini to “ZoneAlarmCompatibility=1” AND (B) set special proxy settings for each of one’s web browsers.

(see e.g., https://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=22)

Is version 5.0 still subject to the same incompatibility with ZoneAlarm?

Or has this incompatibility problem been resolved in version 5.0?

If the incompatibility has not been resolved, what must one do to set up avast! antivirus 5.0 so that it can run side-by-side with ZoneAlarm?

The “Release History” web page (Version 5.0.545, 2010-05-06, http://www.avast.com/release-history) notes “Compatibility improvements in the Web Shield”. But the words used are not sufficiently specific to determine whether that line is referring to this issue.

I’m running ZoneAlarm Security Suite, ver. 6.5.737, on Windows XP SP-3, and have recently upgraded to avast! Free Antivirus 5.0.677.

Would appreciate hearing from anyone who knows the answer. Thanks.

You should definitely not be running zone alarm security suite with avast, zone alarm firewall is ok with avast but two av’s will create problem’s to be sure and your security levels will be compromised and most likely your cpu will not work properly if not crash. You should never have two of any av together, avast will work nicely with malwarebytes free or pro if you require an extra layer of protection.

Overlooked mentioning that I am NOT using ZoneAlarm’s anti-virus module. It’s turned OFF (for reasons cited by craigb, above).

I only use Zone Alarm firewall and its Privacy Control/cookie control features. Anti-virus is, and has been, from avast!

Not enough to turn it off, it needs to be not installed to begin with, due to conflicting driver issues, same goes for any on-access AV.

There are a couple people here using ZA firewall with Avast!5, but by most accounts, compatibility with ZA did not get better from Avast! 4 to version 5, it got worse.

Carlos Vasquez,

You must be using a very old version of ZoneAlarm Pro as the newest versions don’t have “Privacy Control/cookie control” features.

ZoneAlarm & avast! 5 are fully compatable with each other.

I’m using the newest version, ZoneAlarm Pro version: 9.3.014.000.

I suggest you update to the newest version of ZA Pro or ZA Free.
