Is Web Shield supposed to scan https:// traffic ??

As I use avast! Free 5.0.677, I note that the Web Shield seems to operate as one would think it should–except that it does not appear to scan any https:// (i.e. “secured http”) traffic.

Is the Web Shield supposed to scan https:// traffic? Or have I maybe missed some setting in either avast! or my browsers.

I get no Web Shield scans of https:// traffic using IE 6, Firefox 3.6.3, or Opera 10.53.

Just curious. Thanks.

No it isn’t, that is the whole point of HTTPS secure encrypted communication, to keep prying eyes out including your anti-virus.

Even if it were to scan https traffic it would have to try and decrypt the content, something that would require enormous processing power, making browsing https connections very slow.

DavidR,

Thanks. I thought that might be the case. But wanted to check with someone more knowledgable than I.

Carlos

You’re welcome.
