Is Win32:Malware-gen heuristic, or a real virus?

This post is in relation to my prior post about problems with the Encrypted Video EXE, found here:
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=63177.0

Simple questions … maybe these will actually get a reply ;~) …

  1. When AVAST describes a hit as “Win32:Malware-gen”, is that an ID of an actual, known virus, or is it a case of some internal general-pattern-sleuthing heuristics making a decision about some code that it is “most likely” a virus???

  2. If the latter (heuristic) case is true, how can I lock out that kind of checking in AVAST … or create some kind of generic “OK, let it pass” entry for these files. Note … they all are EXE’s, and have different Titles … but I could arrange to make the first five char’s always match a given string, if that works.

Please help, with either or both questions. Follow the link if you want more info.

Thanks!

welcome here at first its mostly a real detection avast have done. Avast have always have very few detections that have been a false threat. But they have put different name on the infection, to be able to know what infection it is compare to what outer antivirus companies would give it.
hope this will do as an answer for you.
