issue with browsing & accessing some web pages

Hi,
Just wondering if someone could please help me. I have recently set up my notebook computer and just got connected to dial up internet. For some reason there are certain web sites - such as yahoo email and msn chat that I cannot get access to. When I attempt to get into the pages it appears to attempt and the heading is the only section of the page that appears (the rest of the screen is white).

I was wondering if this problem might have been caused by the following: When I was on the net the other day a pop up mesg came up with something to do with giving me two options 1 being to view the web page with pictures or without as it was not a secure site and the pics could contain a virus. I chose without, now I think maybe it has now defaulted as setting. Could anybody please shed some light on this little problem please?

I believe your problem may be firewall related (possibly Zone Alarm Pro) and more likely Privacy features in the firewall, we have seen this with Yahoo and Hotmail (MSN), etc. and it was this issue.

What is your OS ?
What is your firewall ?
If ZA Pro read this http://www.avast.com/eng/faq-home-webshield.html.

Also:

  • ZONE ALARM - AVAST Web Shield compatibility dialogue - Install/Update Question - YES or NO

If you are using ZoneAlarm Free you should click NO, because privacy features are not present in ZoneAlarm Free this will not turn off web shield transparent mode proxy.
Use a text editor and edit the avast4.ini file, the default installation location is C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\avast4.ini (I would advise you copy avast4.ini before editing it, just in case).
Locate the line containing ZoneAlarmCompatibility= and delete that line. Save the edited avast4.ini file.

If you are using ZoneAlarm Pro and Privacy Control in ZoneAlarm is set to High and if you click YES in avast compatibility dialogue box the transparent mode proxy in web shield will be turned off you have to manually configure browser to access internet. Hi avid,

thankyou for your reply. However I’m not very comuter literate therefore I’m not sure what firewall or OS mean?

Could you please be more specific?

OS is Operating System.

A firewall is the program used to protect your system against attack from the internet (but not in the same way as an anti-virus), it tries to stealth your system so it isn’t seen from the internet. It also provides outbound protection to prevent unauthorised access to the Internet. Some have other features, like Privacy which can impact on your browsing.

 Hi Irene :

Do you know HOW to computer "copy and paste" ?
In addition to knowing the NAME of your Operating
System ( probably Win XP SP2 ), what are the names of
the "security" programs on your computer ?
Do you have Avast as your antiVIRUS program or another,
such as Norton or McAfee ?

Hi David,

Yes know how to copy and paste. Its Windows XP and the only anti virus installed is avast.

My desktop has Anti Norton however we have not installed it as I was informed it might interfer with avast.

Spiritsongs asked about Cut & Paste, not I.

If you have NAV (Norton Anti-Virus) installed but not active, that is going to cause issues as avast when installed looks for other resident AVs and if it finds them it is likely not to install elements to ensure there is no conflict. Even with NAV disabled there are Registry legacy keys and drivers, etc. that will still be active.

You will need to uninstall NAV as this could possibly cause conflict.

You didn’t say what firewall you are using ?

 Hi Irene :

Since you have NOT clicked on the Norton Antivirus icon on
your desktop, it would be a good idea if you RIGHT-clicked
on it, then selected "Delete"; it would then be sent to the
Recycle Bin, where you should select "emptying" that item.
Unless you can remember the top line of that popup (
"Microsoft", "Zone Alarm", etc ), we are just guessing
 WHERE that Popup came from.
IF you are willing to download, then install the FREE
"Belarc Advisor" from :
  www.belarc.com/free_download.html and run its scan
and then copy & paste its "results" in this "thread", we
would know what is on your computer and would be
better at making an "educated guess" at what caused
 the "popup" .
