After a few days of wrestling with a completely alien-to-me OS (Windows 8 ), I found out that the apps on the new-style start menu in Windows 8 will only work with the latest update of Avast!
In the Mail app I managed to add my Hotmail and Gmail accounts without an issue.
When I tried to add my imap accounts it couldn’t verify the details, returning the error “We still can’t find the settings for my@email.adress. Providing this additional info may help. If you don’t know this information, search online or check with your provider.”
After several support emails to and from my email provider, I contacted Microsoft. After a few hours of IM, telephone and remote access help from Microsoft we just started trying things. Disabling Avast! was the only thing that worked.
I temporally disabled Avast! to add the account then re-enabled it, but Avast! still stopped the email sycing.
I currently have it disabled and relying on Windows Defender.
I’m having this problem to, i really like avast but I’ve never had to use the mail shield until now.
disabling the mail shield does let mail through for me, and i have added all my accounts (i think correctly) to the SSL accounts in the mail shield expert settings.
Hmmm No I am still having this issue… Its intermitent… The module dont seem to scan at all, however, as soon as I disable it, I start to receive and send messages without any problem…
Avast Mail Shield does -not- seem to block Hotmail or Outlook.com from within Mail App… and my Gmail could receive from Hotmail, but couldn’t send… Yahoo/AOL can’t sync at all …nor can my local ISP via IMAP.
I guess Mail Shield is going down for the time being. Wonder if Defender 8 checks email.
