Hi. I recently installed avast 4.8 but the av scanner was not working (it wouldn’t start the memory check and when a scan was started it said initializing… but wouldn’t run). So I searched through the boards and followed these suggestions not realizing they were old and changed the sqlt or whatever it was to xml and the scanner is now running but the resident scanners will not start. The message box that comes up just says “The operation could not be completed”.
Obviously the sqlt is needed for the resident scanners but then I am back to the anti-virus scanner not working. Does anybody know what I can do to fix this? Thanks.
EDIT: Sorry for the non-descriptive subject and I’m on windows vista home edition.
Did you have any other antivirus in this machine in the past?
I suggest an installation from the scratch:
- Uninstall avast from Control Panel first.
- Boot.
- Download the latest version of Avast Uninstall and use it for complete uninstallation.
- Boot.
- Install again the latest avast! version.
- Boot.
- Check and post the results.
Yes AVG was installed before avast and spysweeper well before that. (It uninstalled before avast was installed though)

Are you scanning with avast? Is it working now?
Yes, I switched the sqtl to xml but the on-access scanners (sorry I called them resident scanners before) are not working.
Try an installation from scratch as I’ve posted before. XML or ODBC can’t be used anymore.
Sure enough, reinstall did the trick…
