The sad part is that we all know he's going to be the looser
yes bob he is, he has given up the best free support you can get, how stupid.

O.K. I’ll give avast a fair chance! I redownloaded it last night.
Figured out how to change to XML, and am still looking at all the different settings.
I am sight impaired and get frustrated some times. If something does not work the way I think it should, I have little patience with it. I know this is not fair, that is why I am giving avast another shot.
Thanks

Hi Wildman,
do you also post under this nick in the AVPE/free-av-Board ?
Just curious… ![]()
Glad to see you came back! The one nice thing about the forum is that the problems that people are experiencing are not always with Avast and sometimes with the same program and similiar operating system as you. So in the long run more than one individual can get help on fixing the same problem or someone out there might already have a solution to the problem to give you. Someone might help you out on one day and you might be able to help someone else down the road.
;D
Hi whocares:
Yes it is I.
I don’t know if I’ll stay with avast or not. Have run into some problems since I installed it.
(1) Other than in safe mode, scan disk and defrag do not want to work.
(2) I use dial up, and now the machine does not easily want to connect to my provider.
(3) System now does not want to easily shut down.
Am still looking for the best FREE Virus program. All of them appear to have their problems. So far AVG has been the best, and if it were not for the situation of it not being compatible with a couple of programs on my machine, I would still be with AVG.
Thanks
Wildman

Guess we’re all entitled to our own opinions. I used to have AVG7 on this computer. The key word are Used to have!
Have a nice day. ![]()
For defraging you might want to disable all of avasts scanners
;D
when did you last format/reinstall the PC ?
you might want to Clean Up your startup-entries, maybe post a hijackthis-Log
Quite strange… works perfectly for me in XP.
But you can download and use RejZoR’s application called avast External Control (see link on my signature) and completely disable avast.
Well I use it both in XP and 98 for almost one year. No troubles…
How do you configure avast settings? (Connections tab: Basic, details and Advanced)
I need more information to help you…
(1) Other than in safe mode, scan disk and defrag do not want to work.
They work fine for me a long as i only have Explorer and Systray open in the task Menu. I using Win98SE
(3) System now does not want to easily shut down.
If you are talking about it only half shutting down and you needing to press the power button to turn it off, try reinstalling windows over the top.

This is a Windows 98SE limitation. You need to close everything (and more if you can with Process View or Process Explorer) to run a defrag or scandisk…
I use Win98se and normally just right click on the Avast Icon and hit the stop provider button. If I don’t do this, Defrag will keep restarting.
As for shutdown problem, Win98/se sometimes does that to me but it will shut down about 85% of the time.

Thanks folks, but I once again have uninstalled avast. I now have installed another Virus protection program and thus far have had no problems.
AVAST is good for some people, just not however for me.
Thanks

BTW, folks,
does AVG(-Free) have a (decent or otherwise) Support-forum at all ?
(not thinking to change, just curious…)

“Technical support is available 24 hours a day / 7 days a week, by e-mail and fax for registered users of the commercial versions of AVG Anti-Virus”
You need to have the paid version to get help for avg, and then only by e-mail and fax.
There is a very small FAQ for the free version.
Just goes to show that Avast! has the best support avalible

thx lee,
what a pity, that wildman can’t put in an appearance on his “other free av”'s forum then ![]()
