JKDefrag discussion ...

Started a new topic to avoid off-topic discussion in the updates thread.

This was the discusion:

I would be interested to know how you two came to this conclusion ?

I’ve tried it once and got some mixed feelings about it. Somehow i prefer Auslogic Disk Defrag, WinContig or my own Power Defragmenter.

Have run them all…JkDefrag…Auslogic Disk Defrag…WinContig and RejZoR’s Power Defragmenter. We could go on about disk defrag programs in the same manner as with which browser is better…which is better than this or that.
Short answer is to use the one that you feel does the best job for you the one you are happiest running. Like browsers they all do a similar job. ;D

Definitively, for me, the best defragmentation tool is O&O. Unfortunatelly, a shareware.
For XP, O&O Free does a very very good job.
For Vista, well, I can’t test much of them, Auslogic Disk Defrag seems good also iObit one is working on my Vista system.

The O&O Defrag is a really good one but i still prefer PerfectDisk out of the paid ones.

The Auslogics one seems OK and it’s fast as hell but compared to JkDefrag it …

  • Doesn’t allow you to analyze the disk before it defrags it .
  • Doesn’t allow you to choose different defrag strategies .
  • Doesn’t allow you to defrag a specific file or folder .
  • No command-line options .
  • No screensaver mode .
  • No way to exclude certain files or folders .
    etc.

So for me the main attraction point of this product is only it’s speed and nothing else . RejZoR’s Power Defragmenter is a better choice IMO . Still not near JkDefrag though . My 2 cents worth .

If you read and know something about Hard disks, you will see that JkDefrag does a great job, and is much better than the others free and commercial defraggers…

The Cons:

  • The v3.x still not put the directories close to MFT, but with v4.0 we could put the files where we want…
  • Layout.ini support.
  • Doesn’t have Offline Defrag.

[EDIT:]
I forgot the lack of support for Layout.ini…

Well said.

Good that we have PageDefrag for that, but does anyone know of any alternatives to PageDefrag that work in Vista ?

In my opinion, PerfectDisk is the best for Offline defrag.
This program put the system files, that can only be defragged offline, where they should be…

I agree but unfortunately PerfectDisk isn’t free.

Right :frowning:

Unfortunately, we haven’t a free program that can defrag offline correctly…
PageDefrag can only defrag pagefile.sys (and registry) if the hard disk have sufficient free contiguous space for that, and if not the file remains fragmented… And doesn’t put it on the right place…

Right again, however it is better than nothing . ATM i have PerfectDisk trial version for defragging those offline files but it will soon expire. Was hoping there is a free Vista compatible utility for doing this but it seems there isn’t one. The only solution seems to be to open up the wallet and buy PD.

For those that can’t buy PD, just install it and run the Offline defrag, after uninstall it…

At least the files will be a better place, and in the future only MFT will be fragmented, while the pagefile.sys will be fine…

I did not know that, thanks for the tip !
So after Jeroen implements MFT defragging my hdd’s should be in tip top shape ?

As I’ve posted before, except O&O, for Vista, Auslogic Disk Defrag and iObit

PageDefrag (from Microsoft/Sysinternals) done some job in XP.

I was asking for an alternative to PAGEDEFRAG. You know, something that will defrag those SYSTEM FILES(or OFFLINE FILES as they are called in PD) …

What the man is saying is that PageDefrag does not do a complete job …

Re-read his post again …

I forgot to mention that PageDefrag also defrags Windows 2000/XP hibernation files…

It does not work on Vista (do not ‘find’ the hibernation file).
