I was wondering, what if Alwil would give 1 copy of avast! Linux Edition (he’s using such versions for scanner)to this guy to run it on his server/scanner. He is sending all undetected samples to all participating companies and i belive this would increase the number of detected malware for avast!.
I know it sounds crazy, but it might not be such a bad idea if you look in general (for the future).
i m not sure if that guy is so important in receiving new samples because all AV companie share their virus samples.
Because once you have virus sample sooner than other ones, next time, you could be last one, so it helps.
He’s running a server with all those antiviruses installed (Linux versions). Regular users submit suspicious samples to the Jotti scanner.
If for example Kaspersky and F-Secure detect exact malware match for some file, its submitted to all participating companies that did NOT detect it in Jotti scanner.
No they do not as you can see at THIS thread.
RejZoR, I don’t think this will make a lot of differences. Many people already send unknown things to Alwil and I doubt adding Avast to that Jotti site will increase the amount. And if it does, it will be margimal. Say perhaps 1 or 2 things a year.
Adding Avast to the list of scanners on that website is a good thing, but for other reasons if you ask me. It will make Avast known to more people and sofar I haven’t seen a online scanner using Avast, while all the other major av-software companies have one. Either on their own website or someone using their software on his/her personal and/or company website.
There is also another very positive thing about that site. You can visit it with any browser and don’t need ActivX for the scanning
Thats also one of the reasons, but i belive there would be more than just 1 or 2 unknown samples per yer.
If some sample is detected with other AVs and not by avast! it will be submitted to Alwil. That certanly not 1 or 2 samples per year, because his site is quiet well know and its also included on my webpage.
People use it alot to check suspicios files including me (very thorough check).
AV companies have access (if jotti gave the access data) to all submitted samples of jotti (also all the garbage), they do not get only those that are not detected. They have to download themselve from his server.
Most AV companies share their monthly collections with other (well-known/trusted) AV companies etc.
Well I agree with Rejzor. I would like avast up on Jotti’s page. When you visit his page you can see the last thing scanned and very often its only KAV/ F-secure which are detecting some of the trojans. It would be great to get the samples to avast (I know they get them from other means) but this will make sure they don’t get missed.
I wrote to Jotti and congratulated him on his scanner and pointed him to this forum.
This was his relpy.
'Hello,
I see… nice to see some discussion going on.
Of course, I would be happy to include Avast… if I can get a license.
And the program has to be updateable automatically. And yes, they can
receive virus samples, if they like

If I go to that site looking for a recommended or supported AV program and my OS is Windows, do you really think I’d look at Avast for Linux?
In my opinion, it’s a big issue. It should be the icon without any specific OS mentioned the it’s available for all.
Who knows, we might even get some Apple lookers. ;D
I am not such a close looker as you, it took me a while to even find where it said Linux in that page, i would hope it would be the same foe everyone else.
Anyway most AV’s work in all OS’s, so most would look at the avast page anyway for a windows and apple mac version.
Even if not, we will get more linux users/support anyway, and more virus/Malware samples.
