Is this update a stable or beta release? If you go to the java website, JRE update 7 is still offered as the latest, with a button on the left that says 'Be the first to try JRE 6 Update 10. Should I wait to install it until it is offered as the latest version?
It is now the regular release. I don’t believe beta versions are available at that point, but some old versions are, or at least the previous version.
Did the default folder change? It used to be jre1.6.0_07 and I was expecting something like jre1.6.0_10 but it is jre6 only…
Also, if you try to update the version 7 it says that there is not another updated version… ???
Mine only shows C:\Program Files\Java\jre6 and I can’t recall it changing, but mine was the 6 update 10 beta. I’m just about to uninstall that and install the regular release.
Does the regular release is the 7 one?
I just downloaded the 6 update 10 (latest) for off-line installation which is now installed. The uninstall left tons of stuff behind, even the javara remover didn’t get rid of the folder, removed it manually and rebooted. The install went fine with browsers closed, etc.
Just paid a visit to secunia (had some fun and games with their new site/format) and it reports:
Sun Java JRE 1.6.x / 6.x is up-to-date. The detected version installed on your system is 6.0.100.33, which either corresponds to or is newer than the latest secure version released by the vendor.
So it is somewhat strange this equal to or greater than the latest secure version.
Edit: Update, just paid a visit to http://java.sun.com/javase/6/ and http://java.sun.com/javase/whatsnew.jsp.
It looks like update 10 is still a beta build.
The New Draggable Applet Feature in the Java SE 6 Update 10 Plug-In Java SE 6 Update 10, currently in beta release, reintroduces the concept of the applet, which unifies the desktop and browser experience
So it would look like update 7 is the latest regular release.
Yeah… I need to manually delete entries from the registry… very poor uninstaller… even using Revo Uninstaller, things are left behind and avoid reinstallation (to correct the uninstall process…). Bad.
Bad again… it’s a RC.
Just a bit more Info about Java Runtime Environment Update downloaded from Major Geeks
Sun Java Runtime Environment 6 Update 10
Download Sun Java Runtime Environment
Uninstalled jre1.6.0_07 using Revo. Revo Uninstaller remove 1600 odd registry entries.
Installed JRE Update 10 without a hitch.

I haven’t seen any speed improvement from that new quick-start thing. Possibly there’s no gain if, like me, you’re already caching applets.
