Tonight while running a thorough scan of my PC with Avast, it detected a “virus” which it called, “JS: Classloader - 7”. I told Avast to delete it, but I can’t find very much information about it on the internet. Has anyone here ever had it or know what it is? Thanks.

Hi,
some info on earlier variants:
VGREP
- Apply all Windowsupdates,
- Secure your IE (disable activeX & scripting except for kown, secure sites etc etc)
- use SUN’s JAVA VM instead of Microsoft’s… etc…
also see above board-search on
CLASSLOADER

Thanks for the info. I secure IE by using Tools/Internet Options/Advanced - correct? Not sure I’ve ever checked those options before so I can’t remember exactly where they are. :-\
Is there a way to disable Microsoft java if you already have it installed and replace it with Sun Java? Thanks.

Hi All
I used this to help remove MS VM
http://www.windows-help.net/WindowsXP/howto-21.html
As far as I know it’s on XP that it can be removed from.
Cheers

You don’t need to remove MS JVM or Sun’s version of JVM, you need to patch the vulnerability.
A visit to windows.update or Sun’s site and download the latest version or patch it.
If you use/need JVM then removal isn’t an option.
Regular visits to windows.update, prevention is less painful than cure, keep your OS fully upto date.

Hi,
But what do those of us do who don’t have XP?
I run Win 98SE & WinME on 2 PCs and have got classloader viruses.
I can’t get MS updates nor the latest Java.
How can I make Java secure please?

I think you should have looked at the creation date of this topic over three years ago, when MS JVM was still available.
Now MS JVM isn’t available on windows update or MS Downloads, no matter what your Operating system is.
Why can’t you get the latest JAVA is there not a version that still supports win9x or winME ?
What version do you have ?
Ensure you have the latest version of JRE (JAVA Runtime Environment) because older versions can be vulnerable to malware. First remove All Older Versions From Add/Remove Programs.
I would say don’t so this until you check that you can get a version that supports older OSes, if you can’t I have no idea how you might make JAVA secure, short of updating your OS so you can get a recent version of JAVA. Security will always be a problem with older OSes which are no longer supported, even by MS and you will find the same problem with security applications, many AVs (avast is an exception) don’t support win98.
Then get the latest update from here http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp

Thanks for that I had a quick look but at almost 3 a.m. I didn’t spend much time trying to find it hoping could continue the hunt.
You’re welcome. I always have trouble with the way they have things layed out there.
