I am evaluating avast. So far, I find it invasive. One of the things Bill Gates ‘gifted’ us with was invasive software. That is, software that can and does interrupt your workflow to needlessly get your attention. (Linux can do this as well, sadly) Avast does this. Time and again I will be interrupted while running an application that has the full screen - only to find myself staring at a suddenly exposed desktop while being told that the database has just been update. I really didnt need to know that at that precise moment.
As a programmer, I can think of many ways to make this information available without using the three year old annoying child tugging at your shirt model. Avast is just following Microsofts lead in this.
Hi Jim
As a programmer, I guess you’ve tried all the configuration options, from “Check for full screen applications before diplaying popups.” through “silent mode” or turning off automatic updates completely, without finding a satisfactory setting.
Do you have some suggestions as to how avast! may be improved to become less “invasive”
P.S. I don’t remember BG gifting me anything! I paid money to use this OS. ;D
I am amazed how people don’t spend some time playing with options and going through program settings. This is one of those obvious ones… option that is not hidden in any way…
1.) Right click on avast! icon in your system tray.
2.) Click on PROGRAM SETTINGS…
3.) choose TROUBLESHOOTING tab in the left pane.
4.) Put a checkmark to CHECK FOR FULL SCREEN APPLICATIONS (e.g. games) BEFORE DISPLAYING POPUPS.
As we all can see, that’s 4 (only 4) easy steps and you’re good to go. 4 is too many steps ? Well, that’s why we have program settings, avast! is highly configurable AV application, you just have to start learning about it.
And… avast! being invasive is not true. Have you ever tried Norton ? If you haven’t, then you don’t know what’s invasive.
