OK,this isn’t earth shattering but was wondering about the updates. On some mornings (this being one of them) when I boot up the computer I don’t get the latest update from avast. I just checked and the 4.5.2013 - 130504-0 update is available, now I know my computer like others is set to check for updates every 240 minutes (was told this is the default). ,even though my computer was turned off,the clock knows that avast should check for updates every 240 minutes, lets say that the 240 minute time passed right before I booted up,and the latest update release was lets say 60 minutes prior to that, is this taken into consideration for the updates,in other words lets say avast would normally check for an update (for my computer) at 4am,then again 240 minutes later at 8am and I booted up at 8:05am ,now even if the computer is shut down those times have passed (4am and 8am update check),so my next check for an update wouldn’t be til approx 12 noon when I would get the latest update that was actually released hours earlier,is that correct? This isn’t a big deal, was just curious as I updated the program yesterday to the latest 8.0.1488 and I always think something will go wrong after I do an update. I know I can manually update but I want to make sure the the automatic update is working correctly, thanks, hope you understand what I’m asking.
I don’t believe that is correct, this is the update check interval, once that interval is reached avast should check if you are on-line.
I frequently get updates shortly after booting because my computer has been switched off much longer than the update check interval (I have my interval set to the minimum for the free version 120 minutes), so it knows that the interval was reached and that no check was made.
I believe that if an update check is made, then and only then would the update interval be reset.
Dave I must have gotten the update but I didn’t notice any pop up to let me know, when I opened the UI I saw that the current version was,130504-0,which happens to be the latest update, maybe I missed the pop up but I don’t think I did,no pop up changes have been made by me,I’ll just have to wait until the next update release. Even if I right click the avast icon in the tray the “show the last pop-up message” line is grayed out,now this could have been because I rebooted a few times after I first noticed what was going on this morning and the update had already taken place, its no big deal, like I said if another update is released today or tonight sometime I’ll find out if its working OK,
Avast always checks for updates when you turn on your pc. After always checks according to the programmed time interval from the time they are turned on the PC. Even if within the programmed time interval becomes a manual update interval remains the same.Example: i turn on the PC to the 8.00am , avast makes an update. After it would be at 12.00 am even though the 9.00,10 ,00 ,10.30 am do a manual update, avast to 12.00 will be updated automatically
Well if you aren’t at the system you could easily miss the popup notification of the update, more so if you have reduced the duration that the popup stays visible (as I have done).
The 1st check I would do is as you have done, to right click on the avast tray icon and select ‘Show last popup message,’ that would confirm if you have had an update or not.
If it is grey ‘as in my image’ then you haven’t had an update notification, but if you have rebooted that would no longer be available.
Remember there may not have been an update available, so it is on to the next step checking the Maintenance > Update information, that would at least show the time of the last update check. This may or may not have been when an update actually occurs.
Well I’ll find out at the next avast update thats released. My UI says I have the latest update so I must have missed the pop up but I didn’t leave the computer after booting it up the first time this morning. My pop up is set for 20 seconds and yes I know you can change the time. Like I said this is no big deal if I’m still getting the latest updates. As I mentioned in my initial post I always worry whenever updating the program.
OK,just so I know, avast update 4.5.2013 - 130504-1 has been released,so I turned off my computer and re-booted. I didn’t get the latest update after re-booting,should I have gotten it on the reboot,or do I have to wait until my “normal” check for update time arrives (which is set at every 240 minutes) In other words a check for updates may have beeen made 3 hours ago but the update just came out 1 hour ago and even though I rebooted and the new release is available I won’t get it for another hour which totals 240 minutes???
How did you know it was released, e.g. how did you check ?
What are your avastUI > Settings > Updates > Proxy Settings ?
The default is Auto detect, recommend you use Direct connection (no proxy).
Dave found the update here, and I already use the direct connection.

Should I have gotten the update on the reboot???
OK, I don’t know what is going on with your system, but I don’t constantly switch mine off, it is on all day and I only shut it down at night. So more often than not I will have an update available once my system checks for updates.
Just kinda strange like I said,I don’t want to manually update unless several hours pass and I don’t get anything. I updated to 8.0.1488 yesterday so who knows, will let some time pass until I check again. I’ll post the results weather good or bad, lol. BTW I only shut down at night also, usually boot up early in the am. I only tried rebooting to see if I would get the latest update, normally I wouldn’t have.
If you use your computer for a period of time then shut it down you may only receive one vps update.
Let’s say your machine was shut down for two to five hours you may or may not receive another update upon reboot.
Some days there is only one vps update other days three and very rarely four.
Just because you don’t see a pop-up doesn’t mean you are “not” up-to-date.
Check your “defs” file to see if you are getting streaming updates.
Right click on the avast desk top icon>click “open file location”>double click “defs”>double click “stream”.

Hey Dave,I did another reboot and the update came through OK,guess I’m just paranoid, thanks for your help.
No problem, generally I don’t go looking for trouble unless I have a suspicion something is wrong or I’m getting errors displayed. If your auto updates were failing generally you would get a Red popup instead of the usual Green auto update notification.
My problem with automatic updates is that they aren’t automatic any more, with Avast! free.
First, I have to decline (again) to purchase a different version. Then I have to OK the reboot. Then, after the reboot, I have to decline (again) to install Chrome and a Google toolbar.
Really, this isn’t a hardship for me, but I’m also supporting far less computer-literate relatives, who needed to be talked through what used to be a completely automatic process for every update. And I’m still trying to talk them through the de-installation of McAfee, installed in pretty much the exact same sneaky sideways manner by their last Java update.
Please put this back the way it used to be: setting “Automatic Update” led to actual automatic updates. -JW
