Just finished installing Avast Home- No web access

Just finished installing avast home. I can’t connect to the internet through Internet Explorer or Firefox. I terminated web shield and that allowed Explorer to connect. The update for Avast cannot connect even now. I allowed Avast as an exception in Windows Defender and it didn’t do anything.

What is your firewall ?
Does it allow ashWebSv.exe internet access ?

  • If it does delete the entry for it and reconnect to the internet, this will force the firewall to ask permission again.

Have (or did) you another AV installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

I have windows firewall. I do not know how to check if it allows Ashwebsv.exe in the address. I did have Norton AV on this computer and removed it with an uninstaller program. I don’t think that there is anything left of it. I also have windows Defender on this computer.

Don’t worry, it’s everything ok. Windows firewall isn’t culprit here.

Please, follow (again if necessary):

  1. Remove NAV or Norton 360 through Add/Remove programs from Control Panel. Boot.
  2. Use Norton Removal Tool for Windows 2000/XP/Vista or Norton Removal Tool for Windows 98/Me. Boot.
  3. Install avast! (or repair the installation) and boot.

The Norton Removal Tool uninstalls all Norton 2008/2007/2006/2005/2004/2003 products and Norton 360 from your computer.

Norton can be a real pig to get rid of, the forums are littered with posts of what Norton has left behind. You would be well advised to run the tool given by Tech.

The windows firewall doesn’t check outbound connections so shouldn’t be getting in the way which, just leaves possible Norton remnants.

Got rid of the Norton and everything seems to be operating normally, or at least as normal as Vista can behave. Thanks for the help you guys.

No problem, glad I could help.

Welcome to the forums.

Glad to know
