Hello,
So I get called up this morning from my grandma who was wanting to get me and my wife a wedding present (we just got married a month ago) and she said that she emailed me some ideas. So I open up thunderbird and sure enough theres a email from her with ideas…and a few other more “explicit” emails. You know the kind, nothing she would ever send to anybody.
So putting the wedding present idea on hold I tell her I’m 100% sure she has a virus/trojan/spyware of some kind. Since she lives in ohio and im in texas I have her download Teamviewer (thats what I use for long distance apt’s). She got that downloaded and installed with my guidance and we get connected, Upon connecting to her desktop I notice everything was different from when I saw it last 3 years ago before I moved. Well I learned it was a “new” computer that her friend didnt want anymore because it was running slow and my grandma’s old computer “crapped” out.
Well anyways, I notice upon connecting that she had BOTH Norton IS and McAfee IS BOTH way out of date (they were both 2010 versions) and neither had been updated in over a year. But to make a even longer story short I remove both do full scans with Malwarebytes, HMP, TDSS killer and Gmer (just to make sure theres no rootkits) and set her up with avast free and Malwarebytes for weekly scans. But I still notice the computers running slow, I remembered something she said earlier about the computer being from 2000 I load the computer specs and it only had 428mb of RAM :o. A laptop that I used to use during HS was from 98 and it had 512mb of RAM. I got it running a wee bit faster after some more cleaning/tinkering but I told her ultimately it would be best to either have someone closer to home upgrade her RAM or just buy a new computer.
