Just installed Avast ....can't go online

As the headline says. Suddenly, my computer can’t access the internet.
So I’ve paid good money for something I can use for absolutely jack feces, because I can’t go online. Thanks a lot, Avast.

How do I solve this problem? Or is the only way to uninstall and throw away the money I paid?
Pretty pissed at the moment to tell you the truth…

What version of avast do you have avast! Pro or avast! Internet Security (latest version 7.0.1426) ?

A temporary measure whilst investigating would be to Stop the Web Shield. I believe that it may be this which is being blocked, rather than avast blocking the internet.

What is your operating system and firewall ?
Does it allow avastSvc.exe internet access ?

  • If it does delete the entry for it and reconnect to the internet, this should force the firewall to ask permission again.

Have (or did) you another Anti-Virus installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?

The latter.

Done. Doesn’t seem to help, though. I stopped it, restarted…and still doesn’t work.

OS is the customer preview version of Windows 8 (sucks balls, but that’s a different story and not you guys’ fault!) The firewall I have is the one that came with Avast.

    I don’t know how to check/do that?

No, I started by installing the free version of Avast, and as it ran out, I upgraded to the full paying version. Funny thing is, there was no problem with the free one…but now?? sigh

When using the free version of avast, presumably with win8 C P did you have another firewall installer or just the win8 firewall ?

Unfortunately I don’t use AIS, so I can’t say where/how to check on the program permissions (Process Control), etc. But from the avastUI, Support, Program Help (opens the help file), check out the Firewall section. You may also want to check what Security level you have chosen, Home/Work/Public as that could have an impact.

It may be best to try a clean reinstall of AIS if there was any issue with the upgrade:

  • Download the latest version of avast Internet Security 7.0.1426 http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn’t save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.

  • Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear.exe find it here and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for 5.x, 6.0.x and 7.0.x).

    1. Now uninstall avast! (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for 6.x if previously installed and then for 7.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.

I’ll try that.
However - I only bought one licence. Wouldn’t the program think I was trying to install on anothe computer, and then refuse to activate?

No, you can reinstall as often as required, provided you don’t exceed the number of systems the license is for. e.g. not installed on two separate systems at the same time.

Sigh…tried again…still blocked off access to the internet after I installed it!
Now even in the trial version (which is the default one installed before the licence is typed in)…

How do I go about getting a refund? This is untenable.

Sorry to hear that you’re having problems. If you absolutely need a refund, you could try here: http://store.avast.com/store?Action=DisplayReturnAndCancellationsPage&Env=BASE&Locale=en_US&SiteID=avast

Otherwise, you might want to wait until the retail version of Windows 8 comes out, since it’s still beta, there will be problems with various software. I guess you shouldn’t really be using it as a full-fledged production OS until it’s actually released.

It’s been working just fine here since the developers release. My only complaint is having to re install each time instead of simply upgrading.

That’s good to know. I guess my point was that he shouldn’t be paying for A/V software for a version of windows that isn’t even released yet.

If there were problems (as the OP is apparently having), there isn’t really any support or guarantees that the paid software will work. I’m also not sure if he can just ‘upgrade’ from Win 8 Final preview to a full fledged win 8 build once released. Not that it really matters, he could just install the full version when it comes out and re-insert his paid key, but still.

I wouldn’t pay until the OS is actually released, if I were to pay at all.

Just sayin.

Now I had the same problem I wanted to try the paid version and I lost all internet access. So after trying to repair my network adapter which did not work I went into add and remove programs and I repaired avast and bam it worked! I hope this helps you
