3 antiviruses 1:windows defender 2:McAfee Internet Security 2009 3:Avast Freeare you running avast and McAfee ?

running 2 AV on the same computer can create all kind of mysterious windows errors and false detections
why you should never run more than one AV ( see reply from quietman7 )

Clash Of The Antivirus Apps

OBS: windows defender and microsoft malware removal tool is not AV
The place i am renting my computer is rac rent a center and they told me to have McAfee and avast they recommend it to me and my computer isnt having errors at all it is faster than it has ever been with 2 antiviruses
Having two resident scanners installed is one too many and not recommended as rather than provide twice the protection it can cause conflicts that could leave you more vulnerable. The fact that you haven’t had any conflicts is more luck than judgement as there are many such conflict cases in the forums.
As for the “malware removal tool,” that is the monthly Microsoft security update and only runs once one demand it isn’t resident, so shouldn’t be an issue.
Ok than how do i turn off McAfee or Avast? without uninstalling them i can turn off windows defender any time i need to
Ok than how do i turn off McAfee or Avast? without uninstalling them i can turn off windows defender any time i need toyou have to uninstall one of the AV programs......turn of is not good enough
Turning it off isn’t enough as it is the low level drivers that resident AVs load that get in the way and they are still loaded even with the AV element disabled.
You could uninstall McAfee, reboot and then do a custom installation of McAfee and deselect the AV element, leaving just the Firewall. I haven’t got the slightest idea how you go about this or even if it is possible in the McAfee installation as I have never used it.
One thing for sure, McAfee has been a bit of a passenger in all of this, so If I were going to uninstall anything that is what I would be uninstalling if it were me. Then get a free firewall application to replace the McAfee firewall element.
Many forum users are using these:
- PC Tools Firewall seems to have the least user headaches as it doesn’t seem to be constantly asking the user questions about this and that.
- Online Armor for the most parts fine but it has caused some users grief after avast program updates and that is something you have to watch out for.
- Outpost Firewall 2009 free, a cut down version of the Outpost Firewall Pro version, which should still provide good protection, http://free.agnitum.com/. Download, http://www.filehippo.com/download_outpost_firewall/
if my computer is a 8GB should having 2 antiviruses mess up my computer?
The qty of RAM, CPU, hardware, etc. etc. has nothing to do with it, it is conflict between low level drivers that can cause the problem. These low level drivers hook files so that they are first scanned before being allowed to run, this is like two dogs fighting over one bone.
At best a low level driver conflict would cause duplication of scan at worst it could lock your system. Now just imaging if this happened on boot and locked your system during boot. It doesn’t bear thinking about.
OMG! how do i keep McAfee on my computer just so it wont work at all and all and how do it so i dont have to uninstall it
Hi Coolmario88cp,
Two resident av solutions on a system is definitely not a good idea. One could have one resident av solution (that sits on the sytem and scans in the background etc.) and a couple of non-resident on-demand scanners for additional scanning of malware as for example MBAM and SAS, that is a good construction. Two resident av solutions on one computer must be compared to two guard-dogs watching over a residence, they are not going to guard the residence, but fight over a bone and then are about to start to fight amongst each other.
But one resident av solution can do the job. I once saw a house and in the garden there was a sign, that said “Bad dog after 20.00 hrs”. And I thought what a clever dog that he knows what time to come out and actually knows what to do then! ;D

well i dont go on unknown sites and if my computer does start having errors than i will remove McAfee
or will it be to late to remove it than? please help im only 16 years old and i know alot about computers
Hi Coolmario88cp,
Do just that, my young friend, keep only avast on, and uninstall MacAfee’s, avast is the best free av solution around and together with non-resident MBAM and SAS has never been beaten and there are many users here to back up these words of mine.
