Just Updated & it won't connect to server.

I just downloaded the latest update of Avast and now everytime it tries to do its auto update, it says it “cannot connect to server.”

Everything else works on my MS IE and MS Outlook Express. I tried to fix it as the troubleshooting page said to (stop the Firewalls etc.) and still it comes up with that dreaded Red pop-up block saying it can’t connect.

Here is some of the listing:

Can someone help me?

Are you talking about logon time (you can’t update just after logon) of in any time you expect an automated update you see the error?
Is avast.setup allowed to connect through your firewall settings?

Okay, here are the steps that happened.

 1. One morning I got a Avast popup saying that it couldn’t download the Avast Update. So I went to the link it said to go and downloaded the new update (July05 4.6.691).

 2. When i executed the program it came up with a new look about it, but when it tries to download it iAVS updates it says it can’t connect to download4.avast.com becasue maybe you aren’t connected to:

 3. the server (I am)

 4. Your Firewall is the problem (it isn’t)

 5. Your HTTP proxy setup is incorrect (it is the same that it has always been and I wouldn’t know what to set it at anyway)

And so I sit everytime I turn the computer on, it always comes up to tell me Avast can’t connect.

How have you ruled out it isn’t your firewall? - which one is it?

Elements in the program change so your firewall should notice this and ask your permission again. avast.setup as Tech mentioned would change and should be challenged, if you have an entry for avast.setup in your firewall program/applications area, delete it and do a manual update iAVS is fine, you firewall should ask for permission for avast.setup to connect allow it.

And so I sit everytime I turn the computer on, it always comes up to tell me Avast can't connect.
I assume that you connect to the internet shortly after boot? If that is the case avast Will check for updates, if avast.setup is blocked it can't connect to check so you will get the error.

I use MS Firewall and I just went to the page that says on or off and put it to off. I also close my ZoneAlarm some time ago. Now ZA would let me pick which one to turn on and off, but I don’t see anything like that on MicroSoft’s Firewall other than the on/off.

Yes, I rebooted several turns trying different things. Is there a place to go on the MS firewall to make some adjustments?

Yes there is some adjustment to windows firewall: contol panel>security center>windows firewall>exceptions/advanced tab.

What do you mean? Unininstall it? Disable it?

I bet on the firewall… sorry, seems that the NEW avast version isn’t allowed to connect, only the OLD one could.

Server is avast server I suppose…

Make sure your browser is not set to “Work Offline” (this option is generally in the File menu). If it doesn’t help, try switching the proxy settings from “Auto-detect” to “No proxy” (I’m assuming you’re not connecting to the Internet via proxy).

Left click the avast icon > Settings
Update (Basic) > Details > Proxy

MS Firewall although probably not the cause of the problem leaves you veru vulnerable as it doesn’t provide full outbound firewall protection. So I suggest you disable the windows firewall and go back to ZA and see if that resolves the problem. Watch for ZA asking permission for avast process to connect, avast.setup, ashMaiSv.exe, ashWebSv.exe.

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow. You need to be on-line to do this.
If that doesn’t work try, uninstall, reboot, install, reboot.

Tech, DavidR, and Timcan THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH, I finally got it fixed. Here is what I had to do, thanks to all your questions and input.

 1. I had to turn off the MS Firewall and…
 2. Turn on the Zone Alarm and…
 3. Enter the check marks in the Program portion to accept Avast.

It shows that even though ZoneAlarm was turned off (Exited), it still was in command.

So now, i’m going to leave it this way.

Thanks again!

Just remember, the next time avast! or any other program that uses the internet updates, you will again be asked permission to allow the program to access the net. ZA considers a program NEW any time it changes and an update is a change.

No problem, glad we could help, welcome to the forums.

It’s always the firewall ;D
