I updated to win8.1…
the update ate my avast, as per the warning for compatability.
when I reinstalled avast my keyboard and mousepad wouldnt work.
when I uninstalled avast my keyboard and mouse worked again?
is there something I missed?
how can I install avast again and still use my keyboard and mouse?
is there a box I should have ticked?
You did upgrade to Avast 9 before going to Win 8.1?
sorry, not 100% sure? avast was set to auto update, so im guessing yes
the pre win8.1install compatability thing said the update will not replace avast and something about iTunes.
as soon as the win8.1 finished I reinstalled avast. and the k and m stopped working.
Auto update could take time for program releases (weeks etc). So I’m guessing it never upgraded to Avast 9 since you got a Windows warning…
Is it working now or not?
If not:
I’d recommend a clean install of v9.
- Download Avastclear, Rejzors uninstall tool and the appropriate Avast program edition

http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_pro_antivirus_setup.exe

Avastclear : http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avastclear.exe
Rejzors Uninstall tool: http://rejzor.wordpress.com/avast-cleanup-tool/
- Uninstall Avast by control panel [If you don’t have Avast in control Panel go to #4]
- Uninstall in safe mode using Avastclear.
- Run Rejzors Uninstall Utility in Normal Mode (removes traces avastclear doesn’t) - reboot.
- Install the version you downloaded.
- Reboot.
thanks Alikhan for your time and advice.
I haven’t lost interest, but I have to go shopping now.
the k and m work now, but I havevnt re - re-installed avast yet.
yes im a scaredy cat. ill try and get back to it tonight.
sill not having fun guys.
long story short
Avastclear didnt happen
i tried revouninstaller
rebooted, uninstalled, installed, avast twice, now i have avast, it wont turn on and my keyboard and mouse wont work.
the indians from hp support thinks im insane because avast is an antivirus and doesn’t have a keyboard driver??? i dont know why its there, but there it is?
im ready to try avastclear.
can somebody please tell me what im meant to tell avastclear to find?
Apparently they’re not too conversant with the nature of the “hooks” that an AV may install,
such as: preventing keyloggers, monitoring the USB ports, etc. There is a notorious case
where installing Kaspersky could make a Registry entry which disabled all of the USB ports
on an affected computer. This rendered the KB and mouse inoperable, so removing KIS/KAV
or changing the Registry was impossible. The suggested fix in their Knowledge Base article
is to install a PS/2 connector KB and mouse to remove the Registry entry via them. They also
developed a “USBRECOVER” utility to help fix the problem on affected computers.
I’m not suggesting that this applies to your case or is of any help to avast! users - just
pointing out that the “support” people who made that comment aren’t as knowledgable as
they should be.
and that my friend is why im here relying on the kindness of strangers.
Could you go to control panel > device manager and let me know if there are any yellow triangle drivers
Attach a screenshot if possible
thanks for your reply.
i dont have a clue what im doing.
somewhere else it says i have the latest keyboard driver and its working fine
In device manager right click the following items and select uninstall :
Standard PS2 keyboard
Synaptics PS2 port touchpad
Then reboot the computer
i already tried that last night after i had to finish with hp support. (it takes about ten minutes from restarting the computer for the on screen keyboard to appear)
fingers crossed.
thanks.
no sorry, that didnt get it.
avast still wont start and the k and m still wont work.
please its been three days already and ill do anything to avoid the old one week of restore to factory settings and updating and reinstalling all the other programs and then update them.
Alikhan in an earlier post told me what to use to get avast off but i dont know where to find the folder it wants me to find in browse.
OK so when you used the uninstall utility you could not locate the folder is that correct ?
When you run the uninstall utility click the box marked in red and then locate in the programme files folder Avast (or alwil if you have an older version)
If the k and m do not work then that is a keyboard problem
last night i used system restore, always fun. the k and m worked again but there were still avast files all over the shop.
today i downloaded the uninstaller but didnt continue when i wasn’t sure which avast folder l should look for.
your screenshots make it clear for me.
thankyou
after much ado, and a couple of weeks starting and restarting, i went back through the factory default win8, reinstalled everything, got it back to my normal.
(making sure it was avast 9.something)
updated to win8.1, everything works fine.
thanks again Alikhan and essexboy for all your help.
sorry for the all trouble guys, i just assumed if i paid for pro version the autoupdates would be more auto.
The update process is no different irrespective of the version running be it free or premier. But the programme updates are spread over a period to ease the server load
