Keyboard doesn't work, no tray icons after update to Ver 4.8.1229

Old Gateway running 98SE, USB mouse hooked into USB keyboard, USb oston Speakers, wireless USR USB adaptor. everything work fine until got notice to update Avast!

After updating to Ver. 4.8.1229, when my computer starts the keyboard doesn’t function. My mouse works ok. There are no tray icons. Open program Resident Protection shows as disabled. Run scan and icons appear in tray, but keyboard still doesn’t work.
If I disable Avast! in Startup Menu the keyboard works. Open Avast! from desktop and Resident Protection shows diasabled, but no icons until I start scan.
Have uninstalled and reinstalled 4 times, with fresh downloads, still the same results. Have tried Repair and that doesn’t seem to help. Any ideas as to what is happening and how I can fix it?

Side note: When I run a scan, Avast! reports one file as Win32 Trojan-gen, Virus/Worm, nothing else is found.
File Path/Name: C\Windows\Temp_avast4_\unp94481142.tmp

That is where avast extracts archive files to be scanned, and should be cleared on completion of the scan. Why it wasn’t cleared is strange, I can only assume because it detected malware and was waiting for a decision from the user.

You can safely clear the contents of the avast4 folder.

I don’t know if you have done a clean install.

Download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html (4.8.1229, if you haven’t already downloaded and saved that version on your HDD) and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.

Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD.

  1. Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.
  2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, reboot. (this would clear and stubborn settings, etc.)
  3. install the latest version, reboot.

What David R suggests is the most likely fix
however if you have ever had another AV on the machine- or one came pre-installed
after removing avast and rebooting
go to
http://www.pchell.com/virus/uninstallantivir.shtml
go to the bottom of the page and link to any of the listed AV products and follow instructions
then back to the anitivr page
and
http://dl.antivir.de/down/windows/registrycleaner.zip
this is a licensed version tuned to remove AV remnants
follow the instructions
reload avast

Avast works fine with W98

Did a clean reinstall of 98SE on this system back in April when I had problems with my new Vista computer. Removed all traces of Nortons/Symantec then. Manually checked registry to be sure. Have only had Avast! since then. No problems until Ver. 4.8.1229 install.

Followed David R’s instructions and still had problems with keyboard. Did complete uninstall of Avast! per instructions, uninstalled and reinstalled my keyboard, then installed Avast! in Safe Mode. Keyboard seems to work fine now, but still do not get tray icons at startup like before and interface shows Resident Protection disabled. If I start scan tray icons appear after about 45 seconds. If I reboot, no tray icons and Resident Protection back to disabled.

Only change made to settinds is turned off skins for interface and checked that my comouter is permanently connected to the internet.

Since there are no icons, I don’t know if Avast! is running at startup.

Just a quick update.

Made my last post and shut down. About 5 minutes later, restarted and the keyboard would not work. Tried a reboot and still no luck. Decided to get some sleep and try in the morning.

Got up and turned on computer, took out garbage and fixed a cup of coffee. Turned on monitor, log on screen up and keyboard works. Signed in. Programs finished loading, but still no Avast! tray icons. About 5 minutes later, data base update screen popsup and the icons appear.

Doing this post on the 98SE, so everything appears to be OK. If any more problems occur will post.

DavidR and wyrmrider, thanks for help. DLSayre

ps: wyrmrider, check your dust mask before going out.

If the icon does not appear, check if you have ashdisp.exe into your startup programs.

You’re welcome, lets hope it is a lasting resolution.

dust mask?

more like smog filter

or am I missing something (yet again)?

hi, buddies,
I had the same problem described in the first post. my keyboard stopped working all right. some letters like the letter k I had to type a lot of times to digit it and a stranger letter character has been appeared. it was a very strange troublesome error. I have read somewhere I don’t remember now that was the antivirus conflict but after I updated the avast av scanner. this error suddenly stopped. what’s the cause for it? best regards.

I simply can’t believe this has anything to do with your antivirus when it only effects one key and not the whole keyboard, the update is nothing more than a coincidence.

It is more like a sticking key or a keyboard driver issue my keyboard when attached to my new system was the wrong country and keyboard type as the default setting, when changed all was OK. But this doesn’t seem like that either, I always have a spare keyboard, usually my old one and if I have any problems the first thing I do is swap it, reboot and see if the problem still exists.

keyboards do die and this could be an early indication it is on its way out or just clogged with dirt.
