Hey All:
One of my PCs was infected with the KoobFace virus/worm. Now, after removing it, I am unable to access the internet.
Here are the specifics on my system and the steps I’ve gone through so far.
PC: Acer Netbook
Operating System: Windows XP Home, SP3
Browser: Firefox v3.6.3
Security Software: Avast Free 5.0.545. Malwarebytes 1.46
At time of infection, was running AVG, however, when I realized that AVG apparently doesn’t have a boot-time scan, I uninstalled it and installed Avast.
Steps taken:
- Ran Avast Boot-time Scan
- Ran Avast Full Scan
- Ran Malwarebytes scan - KoobFace detected and removed
- Ran CC Cleaner
- Ran MV RegClean - Program removed a number of Koobface entries from the registry.
When I try to access any website, I get the error “The Connection was Reset”. However, I am able to access Gmail, and it appears I can access anything running a secure (https) server with no problem.
I can ping google, yahoo, etc. - just can’t access them via a browser. It’s not a problem with my network, my other PCs can access the Internet fine. Problem is isolated to just the infected laptop.
Thinking that perhaps this was an issue with Firefox, I downloaded Google Chrome from another machine and installed it with the same result.
Checked my Hosts file and verified that there were no issues.
Scratching my head at this point - any help would be greatly appreciated.
