Laptop having issues with unwanted pop-ups!

It looks like you still have the old Sun Java installed.

The latest Sun Java is Version 6 Update 10:

http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

An item in the System Restore was infected so it would be a good time to delete old Restore points and create a new one.

There is a Sticky available that shows you how to do this.

I checked in java control panel and the version is 6 with update 10. Here is the log from removal:

JavaRa 1.10 Removal Log.Report follows after line.------------------------------------The JavaRa removal process was started on Sun Nov 16 08:58:53 2008

I installed Java from here: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

I dont know what else to do. Should I run JavaRa again and reinstall? I have deleted the old system restore files.

Thanks once again.

you may want to do a complete scan followed by a root kit check. You can find that on the main avast page.

I can’t seem to find the rootkit check software. The link from the web site map under Products way at the bottom cannot be found. Thanks for your help.

avast’s anti-rootkit is incorporated in to the avast anti-virus, it is run 8 minutes after boot, and as a part of the on-demand scan from the Simple User Interface for Standard and Thorough sensitivity scans.

You can also initiate it manually:

  • avast! Rootkit Scan - Windows Start, Run and copy and paste this command (including the quotes, assumes that you installed avast in the default location) “C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashQuick.exe” “SUPERQUICK” and click OK.

A log is normally produced after the boot anti-rootkit scan, I don’t know if this is also generated for the other ones I have mentioned, this is the location of the log file.
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\aswAr.log

I did manage to find the anti rootkit, ran it and the system came up clean. Right now I am just cleaning up my system, removing most of the software I was instructed to use, but keeping them on a external drive in case I need them again. I am doing a disc cleanup and defragmenting also. I did remove Norton anti virus and am wondering what programs I should use to keep my computer protected and clean of viruses and malware, etc… I understand some of them dont work well together and I want to avoid false positives. Thank you once again for all the help. You guys are a great resource and very much appreciated. Thanks loads!

You’re welcome, you could start by taking a peek at my signature under my posts for what I use.

Excellent, I have most of these programs on my external. Once again, many thanks. Have a great day!

Just one more thing. I notice you have sp3. How is that working for you?

Not a hitch on either of the systems it is on. I got a friend to download the full 356MB off-line update of SP3 and used that to update my old system that was at SP2, no problems. On my new system (this one) I bought XP Pro (with SP3) pre-installed so I didn’t have to install it as an update.

Perfect… in a lot of computers…

 Hi :

Several PRECAUTIONS should be done PRIOR to upGRADING ( from SP2 to SP3, for

example ) an Operating System. which I feel should include the following :

  1. Get the latest RELIABLE Info on possible problems; I trust the FREE “Windows Secrets”

& “Don’t let XP3 hose your system” from http://WindowsSecrets.com/080911 is very good .

  1. Make reasonable sure the computer is Malware-free ; practically speaking, nowadays

that means running the “Full Scan” of the FREE Ver of “SUPERAntiSpyware” from

http://www.superantispyware.com/ AND the “Free” Version of "Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware

from http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php .

  1. Get the latest PC Manufacturer “Driver” updates , IF there are any .

  2. Make a “System Restore” Point, to go back to, IF the Installation is NOT successful .
