Laptop starts in Startup Repair - aswvmm.sys corrupt

Hello,

I shut down my laptop last night and upon booting up today it went into Startup Repair. The details indicated that aswvmm.sys was corrupt. After running the repair a few more times (18 lol - I restarted my laptop quite a few times trying different things) it indicates that it cannot determine the cause of the problem. Google lead me to this forum and this post http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=125654.msg946179#msg946179 with the same issue. I read through the thread and followed essexboy’s instructions an that’s where I’m at now. I’m hoping you guys can help me sort this out.

If it matters, I normally hibernate my laptop. The last successful boot-up was approximately 2 weeks ago.

FRST.txt is quite long so I don’t really know how to go about posting it.

Just attach FRST.txt to your post. Addition.txt if available too

Thanks. It didn’t create the Addition.txt, not sure why. Attached is the FRST.txt:

Addition.txt will only be created by FRST while you’re using it in Normal / Safe Mode

Did windows state the file was corrupt or was it the last one to load ?

Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same USB as FRST
Run FRST as before and press fix

Try to reboot to normal windows

Well this is what it said in the details after the Startup Repair finished and failed to fix the issue. I wrote it on paper so some words may be missing:

Boot Critical Fie: d:\windows\system32\drivers\aswvmm.sys corrupt

Repair Action: File Repair
Error Code = 0x2

System Files Integrity Check and Repair:
Error Code 0x490

This was the last item on the list, I don’t know if that means anything. I did as you instructed, but it still boots in Startup repair. As I stated in the first post, it is no longer able to determine what the issue is. Attached is the fixlog.txt that was created.

OK this fix will remove Avast so it will need to be re-installed

Delete the current fixlist.txt and download to the USB the attached fixlist.txt
Run FRST as before and press fix

Reboot to normal windows

Thank you very much! It worked ;D.

My apologies for the misunderstanding there, but we have had a few where an Avast file was the last to successfully load and removal of another programme allowed the boot. Glad all is well though
