laptop wireless internet connection

My laptop was working when I was at home and since I took it to another building and hooked up the ethernet cord to get the internet to work there, it doesnt work now that I brought it home. Is there something that I need to put back in like a password or something to get it to work back at home? It keeps saying the cable is unplugged.

I suggest you remove any manual configuration of the network and proxy.

Right click the ‘two computers’ icon on system tray, choose status than properties. Go to TCP/IP protocol and click properties. Set all to automatic mode.

For proxy, Internet Explorer > Tools > Option > Connection and Lan configuration. Disable any used proxy there and set to automatic mode.

I have the TCP/IP set to obtain an IP address automatically just like it was always set up.

Seems that you’re not the Administrator of the computer…
Are you logged in an account with admin rights?

I guess I don’t understand what you mean by admin rights. The proxy is set the way it should be though.

In Windows you could be an user with ‘common’ rights (a common or limited user) or an user with ‘administration’ rights (an Administrator). Control Panel > Users accounts should give you more info about that.

I am the Computer administrator. It is my own computer. Is their maybe a network key that was replaced when I took it to another place and hooked it up? How do I find out how to get to the network key and change it back to the way it was set to before I took it elsewhere?

I don’t know about a ‘network key’… maybe you’re talking about a key of encrypting wireless connection?

Hi schulz, before you took your laptop to the other building did you have to have a passphrase to connect at home? What about at the other building?
My laptop wireless utility keeps a profile of networks that has been connected.Please see my screenshot. The first one listed is my home router and I did have to enter a passphrase (key), 1 time only because I have encryption enabled on the router.The other ones listed are “open”.

Hi schulz, without knowing anything about computer you may not have the same wireless program that I have.
Try start > all programs > look for intel proset/wireless or any other program that may have “wireless” listed in the list. Then open this program and look for profiles ect.
schulz, you should not have to enter anything again to connect. My laptop will automaticly connect to my home network even after using another network.
Just a thought, is the wireless on/off switch on? that is if yours has one.

Thank You, Thank You, Thank You, Bob3160. This made my connection. It asked for my network key and CharleyO told me to download it on a cd and run the program on my laptop. Thanks for everyones help. It’s working great. I just need to do some updating now on my laptop.
