Which version of Avast are you using? Current Release (12.3 / 2016) Requires Mac OS 10.8.x (Mountain Lion) or newer and may explain the issues if you are still using the old 10.6.8 version.

Mac, if that is true than avast need to update their FAQ
https://www.avast.com/faq.php?article=AVKB72

I believe it has been mentioned here before by the Avast team. I know it also requires a 64 bit processor, and most macs that are Stuck on 10.6.8 are stuck there due to the use of the Intel Core Duo and Core Solo Processors which are 32-Bit. Starting Withe OS X 10.7 Apple changed the hardware requirements eliminating support for older Macs.

Besides, 10.6.8 is from July 2011, 5.5 years ago and Apple is not known for their long term support as Microsoft is.

This is not true. the current version of Avast still works on OS X 10.6.8.

Avast does not modify Apple Mail in any way, it “fiddles” with the network traffic. So if Apple Mail crashes, it is 100% a bug
in Apple mail (altought maybe triggered by Avast) that must be prepared for any network data, even corrupted.

Is there something in the system log file? Messages from “com.avast.proxy” are the most interresting ones.

I stand corrected. Kudos for supporting such an old release of Mac OS.
