Latest Avast! Free update (29.07.10)

I received an avast! notification to say that my free version was about to expire, so I updated there and then.

Since then, I have been unable to ‘enable’ the newer version, and also I’m unable to turn on the Windows Firewall.

  1. Am I completely unprotected at this time, and what do I do about it?

  2. Please can someone advise me as to what to do to ‘enable’ the newer version of avast! Free

Thanks for your advice,

Spike.

Check your computer for Malware with

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.46 http://filehippo.com/download_malwarebytes_anti_malware/
always run update before you scan so you have the latest database
click the remove selected button to quarantine anything found
you may post the scan log here

if everything is clean, try a new clean install of avast

I have spybot, a-squared and ad-aware, will they do or should I still download the application you suggested?

Also, I didn’t un-install the previous version of Avast as it didn’t ask me to, and tbh I assumed it would do that itself.

Drop Spybot and AdAware…!
Peplace them with free Mbam.
A-squared has been renamed, it’s called Emsisoft Anti Malware (EAM) now.

I couldn’t get ad-aware to update or scan, it just got stuck ‘hanging’.

This is what spybot gave me, do you think this might be the culprit?

Why would you drop Spybot Ad-aware?

Yeah I knew it had been renamed, but couldn’t think of the name at the time I posted.

  1. You won’t need it, if you have avast and Mbam.
  2. Further Spybot can cause problems together with avast 5.

Atm I’m having problems updating/un-installing ad-aware (as part of the update it’s un-installing old version to install new one, but has got stuck in the middle and now my puter’s just hanging/frozen).

ETA: Atm, I can get to start>settings>Add/Remove Programs, but then it just freezes and doesn’t populate the list, so I can’t use it to un-install anything. So now what?

Try it in safe mode…!
asyn

How do I do that, please?

Restart your computer, as it restarts keep pushing F8.

After I booted my puter this morning, I was able to get to add/remove prorgrams ???

So I selected avast and tried the ‘repair’ option which didn’t work, so then uninstalled it, followed by searching for files and folders and removing most of those (I left those relating to these posts, I believe).

So, I know this probably sounds a dull question but where’s the best place to go for the most up-to-date, clean, install of avast now?

Hopefully that’ll work then… :-\

  1. Run the uninstall-utility in safe mode. http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility
  2. Direct download avast free (multil-ingual): http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe
    asyn

So run the un-install thing again but in safe-mode, even though I’ve already un-installed it?

Yes.

Ok.

I’m not arguing but can I ask why? Does that do a more through job of un-installing?

Usually yes, further you can uninstall the old version and the new one.
So you can be sure that the reinstall will be a clean one.
