The latest scan (and cpouple of earlier ones too )done by your nice product AVAST show in the log the following:
C:\WINDOWS\DRIVERCACHE\I386\DRIVER.cab\3dfxvs.dll
UNABLE TO SCAN CAB ARCHIVE IS CURRUPTED
What should I do further?Waiting for your advice
Also on one occasion the scan had the following:
C:\WIN\DRIV\I386\DRI CAB\3cwmcru.sys
Googling this resulted in so much of confusion-some saying its a trojan ,others calling it MODEM DRIVER-that i crossed my fingers and deleted this file(it won’t go to AVAST CHEST even,so i just got scared and deleted it,but before that i had created a system restore point)
Iam not noticing any worth mentioning difference in PC,SO IAM JUST CURIOUS TO KNOW FROM THE LEARNED EVAGELIST SQUAD-what is this entry anyway and is there any way to restore it if it is something useful which I have deleted by mistake
What should be the correct way to address the problem if AVAST SCAN shows somefile to be corrupted and cannot be scanned .
Lastly.is it okay to reduce the setting of Resident scannerof AVAST to normal(from HIGH,which I keep always)during use with the trusted sites? Will it make any difference in speeds of browsing and downloading? or the difference is not much and hence is not worth risking lowering of settings
W’D LIKE TO CONCLUDE BY SAYING THAT I LOVE THIS PRODUCT AND RECOMMENDING IT WITH DEEP PLEASURE TO SO MANY PEOPLE SOLD ONTO NORTONS AND MCAFEES OF THIS WORLD
And according the setting of the resident scanner, I have it always on “Normal” (and all other providers also have the normal setting here), and I have no problems, so yes, it should be ok to lower the setting for you
Hi1
The corrupting of archives is possible when you are trying to download them, & when in that time some of connection problems , which cause the above error you are described.
There’s no reason to worry about it, I can only suggest you to clean windows cache folder with a special programs like CCleaner or WiseDisk Cleaner: try Googleing & You find the addresses of these programs. 8)
qrius2noall: it seems, your CAB archive is really corrupted. This file contains lot of drivers/libraries which are useful when you’re installing new hardware. If you had a Windows installation CD, just copy this file driver.cab into \Windows\Driver Cache\i386 folder.
If you want to check manually if the file is really corrupted, unpack driver.cab to your temp folder with using Total Commander. In the case, you don’t use such tool, try to extract the file manually: “extrac32.exe /e driver.cab c:\temp”. If this tool hangs up, the archive is really corrupted.
pk,Iam just a newbie, not that computer savvy, but none the less I checked the whole folder ofdriver.cab by double click and in so many files there is none named extrac32.exe
So if you could go slow, one step at a time may be i can get to the bottom of it,which I w’d very much like to do.
Also what about C:.…\3cwmcru.sys which I have deleted? Any idea what is its use and if it is very necessary ,how to get it back in the folder
qrius2noall: Do you have Windows installation CD? Just copy driver.cab from the CD to your \Windows\Driver Cache\i386 folder and the problem will be solved.
