The latest from Avast runs very well on my Xp and Windows 7 computers.
The only thing that i have noticed is that a scan takes about a minute longer with the pre release on both computers.Hardly a problem.
I am using the free version.
Thanks

Well I don’t know which the latest pre-release you have got as you don’t say, 5.0.504 is the latest pre-release.
I also don’t know in having update the program that the persistent cache is also rebuilt, if so this would account for the increased scan duration, which should reduce after a few scans.
no, fortunately the persistence cache doesn’t have to be rebuilt when the program is upgraded. But there’s no way to tell that a scan will last 5 minutes and not a second more on a regular basis (let’s say on a portion of disk where data doesn’t change), because this depends on the VPS, and a new scan with a new VPS will always take longer than the scan before the update. So some of the persistence cache has to be re-written apparently. The thing is I asked once (to Igor) how the persistence cache works exactly (based on what…) and he told me that Vlk would explain better…so Vlk, if you read this post, a detailed description of the persistence cache process would be welcome It sounds like it’s more than files and virus database sigs involved…(according to Igor, but that’s all I got)
Only files that are
a) digitally signed by a trusted publisher (e.g. Microsoft), OR
b) on the avast whitelists
make it to the persistent cache. The whitelist is updated from time to time, correct.
But in reality, a scan duration difference of 1 minute can be credited to many other external factors - disk cache state, various other background processes running during the scan etc… you’d really have to run at least 3-5 scans with each version and compare the averages…
Thanks
Vlk
thanks for the feedback
