please bear with me because I am very blonde (only in the computer sense)
Everytime I log on and avast tries to update a get a message saying there is a fault.
Should I re-install? I would be grateful for some advice please

Do you connect automatically to the Internet?
If you browse the link ‘Settings’ in my signature you’ll find a value called AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds that could be changed into avast4.ini file.
Another possibility to solve this is check your firewall: is avast.setup allowed to connect?
