Java Version 7 Update 10

https://www.java.com/en/

Or

Go to Control Panel, Launch Java control Panel and manually update.

When I click on ‘Free Java Download’, the website comes back with:

‘Verified Java Version
Completion checkmark
Congratulations!
You have the recommended Java installed (Version 7 Update 9).’

Does anybody have any suggestions?

Hi Avastfan1,

Yes, you checked right, some java code was being patched and java comes in various flavors.
The version you have is ported back to 9 for some software(use of the new java API enabled that)
The latest version is 10 (do not forget to untag from the ask toolbar install that comes bundled with the java install)
Important issue is that all of versions 6 are now being phased out, check older instances of Java has left, because malware will run the vulnerable version and forgets about the patched one…
If you do not need java to run inside your browser uninstall that plug-in,
or run java in another browser for java depending tasks…

Thank you for the reply Polonus.

Version 10 is now installed, but the plug-in is incompatible with Firefox 17.0.1.

A quick Google search confirms this problem is affecting other users, too.

Therefore, version 9 was reinstalled and will be updated when Oracle fix the issue.

Researcher Eric Romang is rather critical of Java version 7 which has more issues than java 6 had: http://eromang.zataz.com/2012/12/18/bye-bye-java-se-6-security-enhancements-in-java-se-7u10/
An extra in-browser security extension like NoScript and Request Policy could give you protection in the year of the java vulnerabilities and beyond,

Weirdly, I have an issue (Java related??) with FF 17.0.1 on logging on certain banking online sites. Upon clicking the enter button after the user and password info, FF shows a glass icon mouse freezes for ever and if you end the task you can’t use anyother browser, you must restart your pc. I partially solved this by installing latest java but still upon other than normal 100X zoom it freezes. 8)
