Yes, you checked right, some java code was being patched and java comes in various flavors.
The version you have is ported back to 9 for some software(use of the new java API enabled that)
The latest version is 10 (do not forget to untag from the ask toolbar install that comes bundled with the java install)
Important issue is that all of versions 6 are now being phased out, check older instances of Java has left, because malware will run the vulnerable version and forgets about the patched one…
If you do not need java to run inside your browser uninstall that plug-in,
or run java in another browser for java depending tasks…
Weirdly, I have an issue (Java related??) with FF 17.0.1 on logging on certain banking online sites. Upon clicking the enter button after the user and password info, FF shows a glass icon mouse freezes for ever and if you end the task you can’t use anyother browser, you must restart your pc. I partially solved this by installing latest java but still upon other than normal 100X zoom it freezes. 8)
