does the license for avast 4.8 move to 5 or do i have to be stuck with 4.8 for the 9months of my license remaining? there is no information anywhere to say what happens with this. i have uninstalled avast 5 and reinstalled avast 4.8 now.
If you are talking about 4.8 Pro, you can install the new Avast 5 on top of your old 4.8
The installer uninstalls 4.8 and then installs 5, and it transfers your license to Avast 5 
If pro version and you have done a clean install - avast! 5 Pro license convert from 4.8 Pro license. Try http://www.avast.com/resend-license.php now, fill in the form giving your email and 4.8 Pro License key and they will send the new license file to you (presumably it will check you have a legit 4.8 Pro license first).
If home and you did a clean install, avast free antivirus should be able to do that from the UI, Mainternace, Registration.
Installing either 5.0 version free or pro over 4.8 should retain and convert the existing license.
thanks, it didnt transfer when i installed avast 5, and it asked for a license file? is that what i get when they resend the license? because i already have the license key.

You’re welcome, there probably is somewhere, but the idea is that the install over 4.8 is meant to do the conversion.

Because the programs are so different and because people, myself included had multiple freezing when trying to over-ride 4.8 with 5.0, you should UNINSTALL 4.8 from Add/Remove programs in Control Panel, than reboot. Than install version 5.0. After about 1-2 minutes your definitions will auto update. Than go to open the program, Click on Maintenance, fill out the Registration Form (must be on-line to do this) and click submit. You will get a new license key usually within seconds. You’re done!
