License Key is Not Entered

After a System Restore, and re-updating my Avast, it tells me that “license key is not entered” when I boot up, but when I open it, it says that I am registered. Help with this matter would be appreciated!

What avast version are you using 4.8 or 5.0 ?

System Restore can have some unpredictable results at times.

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

David, I’m running version 5.0.377. I did a repair on it, but it still gives me the “License key is not entered” message upon booting.

Sorry for the stutter! This probably has nothing to do with my problem, but SpywareDoctor has reported that the following was trying to access my files: C;\WINDOWS\TEMP_AVAST5\UNP44329612.TMP

Have you actually entered the license key, or Registered from the avast UI, Maintenance, Registration. If so did you do this from the administrator account Or account with administrator privileges ?

This is typical conflict from two resident scanners, you should exclude the _avast5 folder from scanning in SD. Why I hear you ask, this is where avast unpacks files that it is going to scan and SD is hooking these unpacked files before avast can scan them. Once avast is able to scan them if clean then the _avast5 folder is cleared, so it is two dogs fighting over one bone.

When I reinstalled Avast5 it was already registered to me, I didn't have to input the code.

Since you report that the repair doesn’t work, it may be best to do a clean reinstall (uninstall, reboot, install) and register from the avast UI, Maintenance, Registration area.

I’m really in a pickle now! I tried uninstalling in Safe Mode using aswclear, but it was still in my Start menu after reinstalling. Then I unistalled again in normal mode, but it remained. Finally used Ccleaner, which did the trick, but ran aswclear for safe measure. After downloading Avast, I received an error message 0(00000000) "Last performed operation was: spawning I’m going to check back later, but I hate being without any virus protection at all. If I don’t get another suggestion at that time, I will probably do a System Restore or, heaven forbid, install AVG!

Finally got it installed, tried Safe Mode, it’s up and running! I registered, but never did get a license code. Is this normal?

Glad that you have got it up and running. In version 5 the registration is via UI, Maintenance, Registration, is that how you did it ?
If so that is normal there is no need to email it as it is done on-line and entered into avast 5. You should also see in the summary section of the UI the registration date and expiry, etc. can you ?

I’m not a fan of system restore as it can also have unexpected/unwanted consequences. Though if you haven’t got anything else, then that is all I can suggest. I use hard disk imaging instead of system restore, this makes an exact image of your hard disk or partition at the time of the backup image (I do one weekly).

David, thanks for all your help. Actually, I back up my hard drive weekly too using Acronis…didn’t think of using it! Yes I did it via UI, Maintenance, Registration. To be truthful, when you mentioned UI before, I didn’t know what it meant…even googled it!! (BTW- what does it stand for?)

Just looked at google again…User Interface!!!

That’s what you paid all that money and do weekly backups for ;D
I just restore my last backup image, if the problem I face is likely to take longer that restoring the image (about 20 minutes).

So the registration is now entered into your copy of avast5, no email required.

That’s correct, Alwil, avast have started out by calling it the User Interface shortened to UI rather than GUI (Graphical User Interface) for version 5. So whilst GUI is relatively common UI is less frequently used, the file name to launch it is AvastUI.exe ;D
