Limiting data uploads/downloads (mobile internet connection)

I’m currently running Avast Free
I often connect to the internet on my laptop through my mobile phone and data plan.
I need to conserve data, since I’m limited to 6GB per month.
I’ve noticed significant data transfers both uploads and downloads with Avast Free on most days, through the Windows 7 resource monitor.
Perhaps Avast is loading new virus definitions and/or is synchronizing with Avast central servers.
Is there a way to minimize internet data transfer with Avast Free, when I need to conserve data? Are there any specific settings. Thanks

it may be stream updates...that are pushed out evry 5min.....
