Are any of the CD based distros worth trying?

I don’t know if I’m ready to commit to a full installation.

edit If I had read before posting I would have seen that Kubuntu and Suse do work from CD.

Yeah, both have Live CD.
Start with Kubuntu and if you feel good, well, stay with it. Just one CD.
SUSE is a ‘full’ Linux distro, 5 CD.
