little help with the taskbar problem...

hello,
I just downloaded avast antivir and when I open it, everything is OK. but I can’t get it into a small icon (i hope you understand). like when I used AVG and pressed the X (exit) button, the AVG didn’t exit but it went to a taskbar to a little icon and was still working.
avast is on my taskbar like other programs but i can’t get into a small icon. when I press the x button, it closes.

i hope you understand

avast! icon missing - As a temporary measure until this is resolved you can create a desktop shortcut for this file C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashDisp.exe (the avast icon and interface to the providers). Right click on the file and select Send To, Desktop (create shortcut). You will need to run this after each boot until the problem is resolved.

What other security based software do you have that might block new startup entries, e.g. Spybot S&D (TeaTimer), AdAware (AdWatch), SpySweeper, Spyware Doctor (StartUpGuard or OnGuard), PrevX, WinPatrol, ProcessGuard, etc. ?

Check the option in the Appearance tab of Program Settings. Or Make a link to ashdisp.exe in your startup folder.

However this could also be down to AVG not being removed or remnants remaining.

AVG8 Remover, download tool from here, http://www.grisoft.com/ww.download-tools there is a 32bit and 64 bit windows version, ensure you use the correct one.

um, i don’t think i have any other software…
i just uninstalled avg7.5 and restarted my computer, but it’s still the same.
i didn’t understand the icon shortcut point. in my desktop, i have the avast! antivirus icon.
i ran a virus test and it also said that virus chest server is not running. i read the FAQ but i couldn’t find anything helpful, though.

and one more thing. is this possible that avast opens automatically when windows starts.

(sorry for bad english)

If as you say (i just uninstalled avg7.5 and restarted my computer, but it’s still the same. ) I assume that means you didn’t uninstall AVG first ?

If so then it is possible that avast hasn’t installed correctly, so I would suggest that you uninstall avast, reboot, reinstall avast, reboot.

The purpose of the desktop shortcut is to start avast when in safe mode (as it doesn’t start in safe mode), or to do a memory scan and open the Simple User Interface to run an on-demand scan. In normal windows mode you shouldn’t need that as avast starts automatically and use the Icon to start the Simple User Interface to run an on-demand scan.

At any time, follow David’s suggestion…

ok, i’ll reboot it tomorrow and then see, what happens.

but is there a way that avast would start automatically? or is this because of the avg uninstallation problem because DavidR said that avast does start automatically (i searched from the settings menu but i didn’t find anythin)

No I didn’t simply say (because DavidR said that avast does start automatically) there was a qualification in that:
avast doesn’t start in windows safe mode and

In normal windows mode you shouldn’t need that as avast starts automatically and use the Icon to start the Simple User Interface to run an on-demand scan.

You need to reinstall avast as the presence of AVG on installation could have avast disable elements to avoid a conflict with AVG that could lock up your system.

ok, i uninstalled avast, rebooted, intsalled avast, rebooted again but the problem isn’t still solved… :frowning:

I’m not really sure what is going on in your system, what is your Operating System ?

What avast processes are running in Task Manager, they begin with ash or asw, see image ?

Have you tried what I suggested as a temporary measure ?

avast! icon missing - As a temporary measure until this is resolved you can create a desktop shortcut for this file C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashDisp.exe (the avast icon and interface to the providers). my OS is windows XP
I created the shortcut, but when I try to click it, nothing happens.
avast processes - ashSimpl.exe and there isn’t nothing more…
I have no idea, what’s wrong. I don’t know, is this relevant, but before I installed avast I tried to install avira antivirus and it didn’t opened at all. :open_mouth:

Well having avira or remnants of avira could certainly be a problem.

Avira AntiVir Uninstall Package & RegistryCleaner (choose appropriate version): http://www.avira.com/en/support/support_downloads.html.

Try that and see if it makes any difference, you may have to reinstall avast again though.

I did it but everything is the same…
if there’s only one avast process in the task manager, does it mean i’m not protectedagainst viruses?
i’m starting to worry because i cant install avg8.5 (registry key error), avira and avast is acting weird.

I honestly don’t know what else to suggest if you are having the same or similar problems in installing AVs there is something else going on with your system.

Now that could be file corruption or even malware.

You didn’t say which avast process was running as that is critical to what protection you have.
The main one being ashServ.exe the main scanning engine.

If you haven’t already got this software (freeware), download, install, update and run it and report the findings (it should product a log file).

I installed MalwareBytes then rebooted and everything is fine!
But does the on-access scanner always start to scan when I open my computer?

Thank you very much for your help!

So what was in the MBAM log, this helps us to help you and is why we ask for it ?

Yes, it does start when you boot, that is the whole point of a resident/on-access anti-virus.

I wouldn’t stop there I would also suggest you run SAS too and also report its findings, don’t worry about tracking cookies, a minor issue, but let SAS deal with them.

This is the MalvareBytes log.
