Browser:Firefox, OS: XP pro SP2, AV: avast, FW: Zone Alarm Pro 5.5.062.011
Numerous up-to date malware spyware programs.

webshield is stopping the ability to login to a specific site i.e.Techrepublic
with webshield running I am unable to login to this site.pausing webshield
isn’t enough, webshield must be stopped in order to login.Once logged-in
restarting webshield requires login again.Adding Techrepublic to the exceptions
list doesn’t seem to help Now having similar problem with login to this forum

Could you please offer some advise on this issue?

What exact version of Avast do you have?

 Avast 4.6.623

Did you also applied the latest webshield?

If not I suggest you do so and see if the problem is solved.

Just downloaded the suggested patch, will give it a wirl
Thanks for the prompt helpful responce great stuff ;D

OK just tryed to install suggested patch and received the following eror
message (please see attached)
I will try for a repair via add/remove programs.
This could go a long way to solve problem

Da!! forgot attachment

This is weird :-
Try a repair of Avast.

start > control panel > add/remove > Avast > change/remove > repair.
Reboot after repairing.

You may need to apply the patch after the repair.
If you do apply it again, make sure you also copy the .sum file to Avast’s folder.

Have run repair via control panel still recieving the same .dll error message
when trying to run patch. I had copied ashWebSv.exe.sum to
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4
However I also recieved an error text when running a repair.

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4
ashbase.dll Version 4, 6, 622, 0

Let’s try a remove/install.

  • Delete Avast using the uninstall util from the website (it’s in the download section)
  • Reboot
  • Install Avast
  • Reboot
  • Try to login to that website

If the login fails, install the patch. Make sure to stop webshield before applying it.

Thanks will give it a go ;D Happy to do so
I’ll be back !!!
thanks very much appreciate the fantastic support

I’m back :o
uninstall avast using uninstall util Rebooted
Install Avast Rebooted.

with webshield on have to login again this is not so good ??? webshield off no problem
I have tied to install suggested patch and still recieving some .dll error
any suggestions have added the site to exceptions on webshield

Strange, I just tried and I am able to login without problems and I didn’t get logged out. No matter what settings in the webshield provider. I think the people from Alwil better take a look at your problem.

What other security (or related) software do you have installed?
And what are you settings in ZA?
Have you tried with ZA closed down and webshield on?

SpywareGuard, SpywareBlaster, SpyBot, Adaware SE Personal,Microsoft Antispyware’
All programs are latest versions with up-to date sigs
As required by TechRepublic Internet Properties privacy settings (unticked overide automatic cookie handling) privacy set to Medium.
ZoneAlarm settings
avast webscan- access and server all ticked
avast mailscan- access and server all ticked
cookie control- remove private header info
mobile control Off
Email protection inbound outbound ON

My system is very similar to yours (no ZA though) and I have been able to get into both of these urls after dropping the ‘f’ of the fhttp:

Were you able to find ashBase.dll? It should be in the ‘C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4’ folder.

Thanks DavidR
the f prefix was an error. I just tryed to login to techrepublic again, with webshield enabled I received the following error.

Redirect Loop Error

Unknown Socket Error

Net Reset Error

Offline Error
Redirection limit for this URL exceeded. Unable to load the requested page. This may be caused by cookies that are blocked.

I then tryed to login with webshield off No problem. It appears to be a cookie problem???

I have ashBase.dll in the 'C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4

I don’t know why i keep recieving the dll error message when i try to run the patch??

I love the concept of webshield as it have saved my bacon many times.

Any suggestions. ???

It’s a miracle!!

My comp has been visited by the Computer Fairy and my problem has fixed itself.

You have to love the Computer Fairy. Buggered if I know what the problem was.

Anyway thanks for all the help, much appreciated.
